Snowshoe Adventures in the Nicola Valley

I have spoken about Snowshoeing near Merritt before but I decided people may want to know about other places near by. Snowshoeing is a natural part to Merritt and our Nicola Valley winters so when the snow flies we don our snowshoes and head out to one of endless number of winter adventure destinations in the region.

Snowshoeing Near Merritt includes Hamilton Hill

If you are looking for a less formal and structured snowshoe experience then Hamilton Hill is a great spot. Whereas Kane Valley has well marked trails, Hamilton Hill is wide open and it is up to you to determine which way you want to go.

You reach Hamilton Hill from Merritt by heading out on Highway 97C (the Connector) towards the Okanagan. The intersection is about 2KM from the 286 exit from the Coquihalla and will be on your right. However, be advised, there is no advanced warning for this intersection so you will have to keep a sharp eye open.

I have spoken about Kane Valley before and I want to visit it again. The snowshoe trails are accessed at the parking lots provided for the ski trails. Nevertheless, the snowshoe trails are near the ski trails, so it is important to stay off them and follow the signage for snowshoeing.

To reach Kane Valley you head up Highway 97C (the Connector) for about ten minutes and watch for the signs.

Helmer Provides Snowshoeing Near Merritt BC Canada

Heading north from Merritt on Highway 5 for about 15 minutes brings you to the Helmer Lake area where you can select a number of options. However the one I like begins at the forestry sight at the lake which is reached by going under the highway and going straight for about 1 KM. You park at the forestry recreation site, slap on your shoes and head out across the lake. When you get to the end of the lake there is a narrow green belt of trees that you need to walk through to get to the wide open spaces.

Alternatively, you can take a right turn after you have gone under the overpass and drive to the powerline to get to the open spaces.

However, if you want a more forested experience don’t cross under the highway but continue on the forest road for about 1 KM where you will come to a landing that is suitable for parking provided it is not being used by forestry as a staging area for their logs. Therefore, in this area there are a number of logging roads that you can go on.

Snowshoeing Tips near Merritt

Like many outdoor activities there are risks involved in snowshoeing. Therefore before you head out do some research on safety provisions you need such as a first aid kit, layered clothing, food and a GPS. As well as, check out the areas you are going to by getting maps of the area. For this you can contact BC Forestry Services.

Snowshoeing Accommodations in Merritt

To enjoy these spots for snowshoeing near Merritt you should consider spending the weekend here. After all, we are only 3 hours from Vancouver, 1.5 hours from Kelowna and under an hour from Kamloops. As well as, we have 2 relatively new hotels, the Comfort Inn and Best Western Plus. For other accommodation you can find affordable hotels on Voght Street such as the Ramada and the Quality Inn. Subsequently, on Nicola Avenue, a short distance from the 286 interchange are some of the original motels for Merritt. Although these units are older most are well maintained.

2021 Merritt Flood & Forest Fires – Acts of Kindness

The Good. The Bad. The Ugly And the Kind.

“Sharing some acts of kindness and hoping for more.”

2021 Merritt Flood in British Columbia Canada – The community of Merritt BC Canada, has witnessed devastating forest fires, and floods in the last year. It seems this year, 2021, Merritt, and parts of the Nicola Valley, have gone through a merry-go-round of evacuation alerts, and evacuation orders. Some residence left. Some stayed behind. All have their reasons. The end result is a population in a community who are tired, worn out, confused, scared, or optimistic and, yes, some are angry too.

During the 2021 Merritt Flood and Forest Fires, tragedy happened on all levels of devastation. There is no ignoring that. There are no benefits in comparing one heartache to another. They all hurt. Some more than others. Some life changing. I wish I could turn back time. Make this all go away. I wish my friends had their homes back. Smiling and laughing again would be another wish. I wish living in Merritt was like it use to be. Unfortunately I am no Genie. No lamp to rub just a water bottle to fill. All I have are big wishes with little answers. But I do have hope.

My Super Power

I take pride in my listening and observation skills. So, let me share my take on that. We are all our own master on what we decide to listen too and observe. We can take it all in, flip it upside down, make what we want of it. Some of us process the positive and spit out the negative or vice-versa. But what you process is up to you. Hence why, with all the sadness, I have decided to share some “warm and fuzzy” stories, sending out some positive vibes to the community of Merritt, Princeton, Abbotsford and to our First Nation friends. I would like to share some of the kind and positive gestures I witnessed along this ugly road we travelled called the 2021 Merritt Flood in the City of Merritt BC Canada.

8 Acts of Kindness

Because of the nature of my work online globally, and locally with Experience Nicola Valley, I see the good, the bad and the ugly of the internet. There are many sources online of nasty, negative with a big dose of nasty conversations. We all have a choice of which lens we choose to look through for every situation life presents us. Me? Well… when it comes to the Merritt Flood I choose hope. We need more stories of good people doing good things during these challenging times. Hence, why I am going to focus on the positive stories and share some “acts of kindness” I and my friends experienced during the 2021 Merritt flood.

(1) ESS and Red Cross

The evacuation had problems on many levels. Remember, no one saw this coming. Yes, there were warning signs and reports and white papers. But… no one saw it coming on November 15th, 2021. No meteorologists, engineer, politician or scientist told us to buckle in for a massive rain storm and possible flooding. Many of us went to bed the night before expecting to wake up to another normal Monday. Well that didn’t happen. The evacuation order caught us all by surprise. Therefore people slipped through the cracks. Communication was suspect. Volunteers were stretched at ESS and the Red Cross. Should I stay or should I go? Yes, the process was not perfect by any means. News flash! Nothing is perfect in a blender of chaos.

(2) Volunteers

I know why it is tough to get volunteers at times. Just watch how some people treat them, like it was their fault. All they are doing is following direction or the lack of. A big thank you to the volunteers for taking care of us with the best tools at their disposal. I know you did your best and you did not design the system nor the process. I also know you are a volunteer, on your time, to make our challenges as comfortable as possible. So thank you to all the volunteers in Kelowna, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, 100 Mile House, Sicamous, Penticton and those in Merritt helping the community get back on its feet again. And if I missed anybody, my apologies. But thank you again!

(3) Let Me See The Light

The 2021 Merritt Flood was a sight I would not wish on anyone. Everything changed in a blink of an eye. Before we knew it, we were evacuated and in a hotel room. Everything was new again including an Optometry Office and a LensCrafters, next door in Orchard Park Mall in Kelowna BC Canada. I needed glasses for the first time and I did not have my prescription with me. But I did have time. Dr. Keevn Otte heard I was an evacuee from Merritt and booked me in and redid my prescription at no charge! Then Ben, at LensCrafters, set me up with my new lens and frames and he too gave me a break on price, on top of the Black Friday Special. I was seeing with my eyes, the kindness of people.

(4) Green Plate of Hospitality

Not sure of the back story on this one but it goes something like this. Someone at our hotel, the Kanata, was out in public one day sharing how eating out all the time was getting old. Someone, was listening in. Who we do not know? The next morning 50 trays of vegetables and dip arrived at the lobby in our hotel from an unknown source, someone who did not want to be recognized, but did it out of the goodness of their heart. To that mystery person if you are reading this – thank you for your kind gesture. Loved the mini tomatoes and green peas.

(5) Class is in Session

Have you heard of the story of Ewa Olguin, an early childhood educator in Merritt, BC, Canada? If you have not, Ewa was evacuated from Merritt like many of us. At her hotel she recognized many of the kids were from the “Strong Start” Program back in Merritt. Her place of employment I believe. In seeing the children, away from a regular routine and their homes, Ewa decided to start a 3 hour class every morning with the kids reading, playing and learning. Thank you Ewa!

(6) Is That To Eat In or To Go?

As we stated at the beginning of this list, the littlest gesture can make a difference. How about just smiling. When you eat at one spot for days on days they get to know you. In our case it was Boston Pizza. It did not take a lot of time for them to recognize our orders and to begin greeting us with smiles, and conversations when we ate in or picked up. Thank you for feeding many of us from the 2021 Merritt flood.

(7) Experience Nicola Valley Pivot

When people are scared, and living in a mist of confusion, information is the currency of choice. I watched as councillors were inundated daily with phone calls, text and emails numbering in the hundreds asking questions and seeking answers. Being on the front lines of the evacuation, mixed in amongst the local population, every day and hour, your sleeves get tugged on a lot. And yet, the questions were often 2 steps ahead of the answers available to councillors. They could only share what they knew and as information was being released. But they knew communication is the currency of choice during a disaster. So they stepped up. First to video, Experience Nicola Valley was proud to pivot their platform, so they could bring daily video updates, as need be, from Councillor White, Luck and Etchart. And then… some councillors met with the evacuees in the hotel lobby daily for briefings and updates as well. It took some guts to put their face out there. But they were humble, caring and doing what was right updating us the best they can. Thank you!

(8) Friends, Family and Business Partners

When the news hit all over Canada of the 2021 Merritt Flood, I could not believe the emails that flooded my in-box from people checking in on us from all around the world. Some I have not heard from in years and a few in decades. It was a moment-of-truth to see so many people checking in on my Brother and I. We are so fortunate to have good people surrounding us and supporting us. Thank you and we are grateful for your kindness, support and friendship.

Social Media

If social media is your only go-too for information, well then there might be issues with that? Working in that field, I understand the pros and cons of a platform with little rules and high engagement. It is a platform which makes its rules on the fly based on all sides of human nature, good and bad. And there is good and bad. Do not get me wrong, social media, is a beautiful thing. I have seen lives changed for the better when social media is used positively. Social media is a treasure for small businesses to get their message out. To me it is an art form. However, at times, it is also a bloody battlefield where communication is won or lost. There is one big caveat to the social media battlefield :

“Bad news travels at the speed of light; good news travels like molasses.”

Together, when we start commenting, and sharing and posting and tagging each other with positive stories, good news will travel faster. It takes a movement, to create a message.

I Choose Hope

I have witnessed how the community is divided along many lines because of the 2021 Merritt floods and forest fires. A disaster will do that to any community. Emotions will run rampant. Loses are off the map. But I have hope because the overall dominating factor in this conundrum are the people of Merritt. They are my baseline in the equation of building back better. Many are my friends. I have been around Merritonians long enough to know they are a strong and good people. Merritt will be back. I will do everything I can to be part of that re-awakening.

With so much to do when living in Merritt BC I could not possibly cover it all in this article. Other Reasons for Living in Merritt BC

Besides all the great things to do in Merritt and the Nicola Valley you are only a hop, skip and jump away from many great tourist destinations. For example, the Okanagan is only one hour away or Kamloops is only 45 minutes away. Whereas other destinations such as the Shuswap (2 hours), the Cariboo (3 hours) or Vancouver(3 Hours) are within a comfortable reach.

This summer we spent our vacation in Magna Bay. This area is on the north side of the lake at the west end. We were very lucky and scored the best value in all of the Shuswap. We were able to rent a cabin for a very reasonable price.

Like wise, the inside of the cabin was very comfortable as well.

The place was very clean and the kitchen was reasonably equipped. However it was not the ritz. Some upgrades to the wall paper and some of the painted areas would help. However these minor imperfections did not stop us from enjoying our stay.

Things to Do in the Shuswap

We were visiting the Shuswap during the height of the forest fire season and encountered a great deal of smoke. However, this did not deter us as we made the best of the various breaks in the smoke and did the following things:

The Beach

The beach was just across the street which made it just a short walk of about 200 meters. Therefore we were able to enjoy the warm lake with swimming and using our floaties.

Hiking

There are many places to hike in the North Shuswap. Of the many choices we did three spots. The first one was at Tsutswecw Provincial Park. This park is home to the viewing for the famous Adams River Salmon Run.

Our second choice was Scotch Creek Provincial Park where we walked the lake shore trail. The Beach at this park is a real treat.

Golfing

The North Shuswap is home to the Talking Rock Golf Course. The course is actually on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake at the Quaaout Lodge.

The setting is truly spectacular and the course provides a nice challenge.

Besides a regular golf course we took in the Mini Golf at Scotch Creek. While we had fun the course was in need of some serous repair.

Quality Cabin Time

We actually spent most of our eating at the cabin. Each of the five adults took a turn cooking a meal. Therefore if you did the cooking you didn’t have to clean up. This way the work load was spread out. It made for great meals that were not burdensome on one person.

However, we did go out twice. The first time to the Hub Pub in Scotch Creek. We were entertained by the Dueling Keyboards while eating delicious unique pub food.

The second time we actually didn’t go out for dinner but ordered pizza from Roosters Pizzeria in Anglemont BC. We expected the shop to be on the main road but it actually was high up the hillside in a residential subdivision. The drive was well worth it as the pizza was delicious and it went well with watching the BC Lion’s game.

Good Things Come to an End

Despite the smoke we had a great time and were sorry to be leaving. On the other hand we are thankful for living in Merritt BC Canada because we have quick access to many fun locations.

Similkimeen Okanagan Road Tripping – Part Two

Okanagan Circle Tours – In my last blog I was talking about circle tours from Merritt, BC, in particular from Merritt to Princeton and then onto the Okanagan. The first part of the journey was from Merritt, BC to Princeton, BC, Canada. While this trip is fun any time of the year the best period would be early to mid August.

On the Road Again – Okanagan Circle Tours From Merritt, BC

When you leave Princeton you want to head out on Highway 3 going east towards Penticton. This is a gorgeous part of the trip as you follow the beautiful Similkimeen River. While there are many points of interest along this route I will be only mentioning a few since this is only a two day tour.

Our first point of interest is Hedley, BC, home of the Mascot Gold Mine. The mine was closed in the mid twentieth century but was turned into a tourist attraction by the Province and the local first nations people. Unfortunately the tours ended in 2018. Despite not being able to take tours anymore it is still impressive to see the structures that were put in place to mine the side of a mountain.

Stop #2-Circle Tours From Merritt, BC

While there are many choices to stop for lunch, one of my favourites is Bromley Rock Provincial Park. This is a perfect spot for a picnic. As well as a great lunch venue you could also take a dip in the river.

Keremeos-The Fruit Stand Capital of Canada.

Keremeos is the last stop in the Similkimeen Valley on our Okanagan Circle Tour from Merritt, BC. Most of the fruit stands in Keremeos are the traditional type where the stands are selling fruit from their own farms which is not always the case in other areas of the Province. For example, in August you can get the best peaches because they come from the orchards behind the fruit stands.

While fruit is the main claim to fame for Keremeos, the Cathedral Lake Lodge is a must see. Unfortunately you won’t have time on this trip but do book mark it for another time. The alpine hiking is inspiring. As well there is plenty of time to do simpler things like reading your book in a comfy chair by the lake.

Penticton is next on our circle tour from Merritt, BC

Hopefully y0u have timed your trip so that you leave Keremeos by 4:30 or 5:00 so that you can make Penticton by early evening. You will need to book a hotel for one night. The more expensive ones are on Okanagan lake while more reasonable accommodation can be had near Skaha Lake.

After you settle in you will want a bite to eat. While they have all the fast food choices the Hooded Merganser is a spectacular place to eat. While it is on the pricier side of things its location on the lake cannot be beat. Otherwise you may want to try a winery on the Naramata Bench. We’ve actually eaten at the Hillside Winery where we had an experience we will never forget.

When we arrived it was a beautiful evening. However, the wind started to pick up and the clouds began rolling in. At this point many of the diners left the patio to go inside, but not us. The temperature was dropping and the waiters brought us blankets. The rain began in earnest but we were protected by a roof. We became the only patrons left on the rooftop patio. As if the wind and rain weren’t enough along came thunder and lightening. It was truly spectacular. By the way, the meal was great.

Day 2 starts in Penticton.

You’ll want to be up early because this will be another fun filled day. There are so many fun things to do from having a lazy beach day, winery tours, shopping and my favourite, tubing the canal.

For wineries the Naramata Bench provides 19 wineries in very close proximity to each other. For shopping you will want to take in the mom and pop shops on Main Street. As well you will want to visit the funky galleries on Front Street.

Finally I do recommend the tubing. If you didn’t bring one you can rent one at Coyote Cruises which opens at 11:00 AM. Allow three hours for the trip and 1/2 bus trip back.

Floating the canal

Next stop on our circle tour from Merritt, BC is Summerland.

Summerland is split by Highway 97 with the commercial section on the west side of the road and the beach area down the hill on the other side of the street. One of the main attractions is the steam train. You have to be careful though because you might get robbed by bandits on horse back! You need reservations and you may not get on board if you arrive too late from Penticton.

However not all is lost as downtown Summerland has some great unique stores in downtown.

Our Final Stop on our tour- Peachland

You have to plan your arrival in Peachland at dinner time because you will want to have the best dining experience in the whole Okanagan at the Gasthaus on the Lake Restaurant.

Whether you choose to sit on the beautiful patio with its flowers and trees or in the Bavarian style of the restaurant you will be impressed. The food and service is also great. As the last thing to do on this trip you will want to take in an Okanagan sunset, Peachland has a stunning walk way that travels from one end of the village to the other. Also there are many scenic spots to stop and take in the surroundings. All in all this is a great way to end your trip as you prepare to head back to Merritt, BC

While this tour ended it is obvious that Merritt is a great place to use as a base camp for circle tours. After all there are eight roads leading into and out of Merritt.

Getting outdoors and enjoying the crisp cold air is exhilarating to say the least.

Winter activities in Merritt BC – Albeit we all want to hunker down during the winter months and hibernate, sit back and wait for spring. Truth be told Winter is one of my favourite seasons to become more active and enjoy Outdoor Winter Activities in the Nicola Valley. Although nothing compares to swimming in a lake in the summer, ice fishing on that very lake in the winter is an “AHA moment”. Winter Activities in Merritt BC is an outdoors enthusiasts dream scape. Here in the Nicola Valley there is a winter activity for everyone to enjoy. Get outside and Experience Nicola Valley!

Snowmobiling on Tyme Mountain – Winters in Merritt, BC, Canada.

Let us begin with cross-country skiing and snowshoe winter activities in Merritt BC.

Importantly and ideally the best place is” Kane Valley” for xc skiing and snowshoeing. It is only located 18 kms south of Merritt, BC, Canada. ExperienceMerritt.com points out that the Kane Valley enjoys a base elevation of 1160 metres (3800 feet). The timbered valley has a micro-climate that can provide ideal Nordic skiing conditions. The snow is generally dry, seldom more than 1 to 1.5 metres deep, and the air temperature is usually between 0 and -15 degrees Celsius throughout the winter. The best winter access to the ski areas is along the Kane Valley road which joins Highway 5A/97C near Corbett Lake, 18 kilometers south of Merritt.

Furthermore with Covid19 and self-distancing there has been an increase with people getting back outdoors and enjoying nature. Albeit cross-country skis can be cumbersome to younger children, snowshoes are much easier to navigate and you will forget you are wearing them.

Ice Fishing truly an Outdoor Winter Activity in The Nicola Valley.

Ice fishing is not for the weak at heart. In other words having to deal with the wind, cold, wet feet and even picking the wrong drilling spots can be trying for some. However, ice fishing is a winter delight for many who enjoy fishing as a hobby. This is an activity anyone can enjoy, whether being a beginner or a pro. On the other hand, when the fish are not biting, make it a family day of fun with a hotdog roast and gooey smores. Lastly, make sure to check the depth of the ice. Safety is key! Where to Ice Fish in the Nicola Valley?

Nicola Lake located 13km from Merritt is a favourite for ice fishing. Chicken Ranch Lake, another lake, offers great fishing for Brook Trout. The fish average in size around 1 lb but can reach up to 3 to 4 lbs. Alleyne Lake (near Merritt) fishes Kokanee. Generally speaking ice fishing usually starts in mid December as the colder weather brings over 6 inches of hard ice. Along with the fish still feeding because of the high oxygen levels in the water. Ideal ice fishing time!

What about Tobogganing? Truly a Winter Activity enjoyed in Merritt BC.

Surely one of the best tobogganing is just before Lundbom Lake. With easy access for cars this is an ideal place with some amazing hills to toboggan down. It is an outdoor adventure with a picnic. A historical fact – the toboggan was originally used as transportation by the Inuit and First Nations groups of Canada. Moreover do not forget the hot chocolate!

Star Gazing during the winter months in the Nicola Valley is ideal. Because it is a smaller community there is little-to-no light pollution to cover the stars at night. In effect the Nicola Valley is one of the best location for avid star gazers. Thus if you are a pro star gazer or a beginner this is your destination place.

Okay now let us talk about winter time hiking. Merritt is situated in a valley surrounded by mountains with an abundance of mountain trails. Makes for an ideal spot for all levels of hiker’s who like a challenge or just a hour stroll.

In addition the Nicola Valley offers trails that wrap around majestic lakes. Check out Kentucky Lake which offers a scenic hike around it’s lake. Assuredly the Nicola Valley has a wide variety of hiking trails available for all hiking abilities. Iron Mountain located just off highway 97C, enjoys a 4k trek to the top. Worth the views.

The MMBA is happy to announce through a Targeted Regional Tourism Development Initiative grant that they have received funding for $145,000 towards the Merritt trail system. We are very excited as this will be a huge benefit to Merritt and the surrounding areas! Jordan Pinto.

Outdoor Extreme Merritt Mountain Biking – Along with getting some quality time outdoors, mountain biking in the Nicola Valley provides the best type of sightseeing on wheels. No crowds. Lots of trails. Mouth-dropping scenery. Therefore to enjoy the trails in our backcountry all you need is a water bottle and your ride. Nature and the adrenaline rush provides the rest.

The Merritt Mountain Biking Association gets all the credit in the Nicola Valley for our trails and for creating such extreme rides. Important to know we enjoy 220+ kilometers of mountain biking trails in the Nicola Valley with 3 main trail riding destinations – Swakum Mountain , Coutlee Plateau and Iron Mountain. Coutlee Plateau primary trail type is cross-country. Iron Mountain is an all-out mountain & downhill trail network. Check out Trailforks and Experience Merritt for more information about the Nicola Valley. To clarify, there are trails that will challenge the most experienced rider. Also offering some of the best family oriented biking trails in the region. Notably some trails can last for hours while some may be quicker. The only time schedule is yours with nature. Enjoy while connecting with a lot of majestic scenery. Expressly there is zero disappointment on any of these trails.

After you have conquered one or more of MMBA trails, take time to cool off and relax in one of the many outdoor patios that are scattered around Merritt. Understanding that it may take more than one day to tackle all the trails that MMBA has to offer, Merritt has a generous selection of hotels and motels. Or are you choosing to camp. The Claybanks RV Park and Campground offers spacious, well-maintained sites along the Coldwater River. Claybanks has you covered with 44 full-serviced RV sites and 20 tenting sites. This pet-friendly campground is open year-round. While located south of Merritt along the Coldwater River, the Moon Shadows RV Park and Campground offers great camping year-round. Especially both campgrounds being pet-friendly.

Jordan Pinto – Merritt Mountain Biking Association

The MMBA (Merritt Mountain Biking Association) came into existence in the spring of 2000.

Jordan Pinto, the President, shared with us that their intentions are to make the riding in the Nicola Valley a great experience. Therefore, one of their primary goals is to advocate for long term trail access by working with Government.

Consequently, the MMBA was one of the first groups in the province to have an agreement with the crown to manage the trails we ride. The MMBA has signed a new agreement with the Province in 2012. Fly Fishing in Merritt at Corbett Lake Lodge is truly a great fishing experience. In the early 1940’s, the Grandby Consolidated Mining Corporation established the lodge as a worker retreat. At that time the lake was not much more than a pond that was fed by underground springs. But with the creation of a dam the pond grew to be the great lake it is today.

FLY FISHING IN MERRITT HISTORY

The Merritt BC Canada lodge was purchased by Peter McVey, the dean of fly fishing in the Nicola Valley. Peter built a solid reputation for fishing at his lodge. As a result people have come from all over the world to experience this resort. Peter not only looked after the nuts and bolts of the resort, he was the chef in the restaurant which also added to the notoriety of his establishment. If you ask nicely he would bring out his guitar and have a little song to sing.

NEW OWNERS

In 2013 Peter sold the resort to new owners. Luckily Peter made sure the buyers were able to maintain the integrity of the resort. Not only did the new owners want to maintain Peter’s legacy, they have taken steps to improve the resort in many areas.

Corbett Lake Lodge has a very solid reputation. Just read what this blogger had to say, (you will have to scroll down the article to find the story). Also in 2016, Canadian Fly Fishing Championships were hosted, in part, at the lodge. The North American and Canadian Championships were scheduled for this year. From the main lodge to the cabins there is much to appreciate. The main lodge has a great sitting area with a beautiful stone fireplace where you can relax, tell your fish stories or read a good book. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO AT CORBETT LAKE LODGE NEAR MERRITT, BC

Whereas fishing is the main attraction at this resort near Merritt, BC, there are many activities you can do to have a great time. Make it a relaxing retreat reading, star gazing and/or lounging around doing nothing? If this sounds like you then grab your lawn chair, book and favourite beverage and head down to the lake shore.

Perhaps painting is your thing? If so just bring your easel and paints and Corbett Lake Lodge will provide the scenery.

Throw your canoe or kayak on your back and explore the shoreline, and photograph the birds and other creatures. Just remember to respect the fisherman and stay clear of their areas.

PROXIMITY TO OTHER ADVENTURES

The nice thing about Corbett Lake Lodge is that it is close to several other areas that are worth a visit. For example, just around the corner is Kane Valley where your options are wide open. You can try more fishing on several lakes in the area. Harmon Lake is my favourite. There are 55 KM of snowshoe trails which are excellent for hiking or mountain biking. The back country logging roads in the area provide safe ATV riding.

The Forestry Ministry has campgrounds at Kane Lake and Harmon Lake. The Harmon East Campground not only provides camping, it is the trail head to the Forestry Interpretive Hiking Trail where you can learn more about the local flora and fauna.

If you’re looking for some urban activity, take the fifteen minute trip to the booming metropolis of Merritt, BC. (population 7,200)

Make Merritt in the winter your destination. Why not? There are no crowds. Outdoor winter adventures are plentiful like xc skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and snowshoeing. Why not make the Nicola Valley your “New” winter spot during the snow season. Merritt is alive and well in November, December, January and even into March in the mountains. called “The Coke” which is short for Coquihalla Highway. I am going on a limb and say, “Merritt is the “Powder Capital of Snowmobiling in BC”.

Consequently, just south of Merritt are the Kane Valley XC Ski Trails. “Cross Country Skiing” at Kane Valley is a must for all lovers of the winter backcountry. Bring a camera for the picturesque scenery along the trails and, yes, there are warming shelters along some of the xc ski routes as well.

Even more impressive, is our four-pronged approach to winter adventures here in the Nicola Valley. Rounding out at #3 is the “Ice Fishing” opportunities in the region. We enjoy over 200 lakes in the area. Many are ice fishing lakes. And #4 is snowshoeing. Pick a backcountry road or head to Kane Valley.

Merritt BC is centrally located.

Accommodations are affordable in the Nicola Valley compared to many of the surrounding bigger cities and communities. Merritt has “Base Camp” written all over it. Enjoying sightseeing day trips without the hassle or added expense of moving from one accommodation to another is a big plus when exploring from Merritt. Spending a lot of your time unpacking and packing up, over and over again, can be a big time waster on any vacation.

Day Trip Destinations

Nearby Kamloops is 87 km with one hour travel time from Merritt. Here is the plus. There are 2 main roads leading to Kamloops from Merritt. The quick and fast Kamloops connector (Highway 5). It is an up-and-over highway through the mountains. The other route (Highway 5A), is a little bit longer, many say more scenic, cuts and snakes its way around the mountains passing by lakes, ranches and grasslands. It makes for a perfect day trip with two routes of scenery.

Kelowna, best accessed from Highway 97C, is just over the mountains to the south of Merritt BC. The distance to Kelowna is 127 km and about only 1 hr 36 minutes away. In Kelowna there are 2 ski resorts to enjoy as a winter day trip – Big White Ski Resort and the other is Silver Star.

Othello Tunnels

While the drive is spectacular. Its only 120 km – 1 hour drive from Merritt to Hope BC. Incidentally Hope has many attractions. Many with no crowds and most are very outdoorsy. Take the Othello Tunnels. It is a series of tunnels through mountains over a gorge providing scenery and some history. You know what tunnels mean right? They can be enjoyed in sun, rain and snow and you stay dry.

Winter in Merritt BC

Notably the Nicola Valley is becoming a better recognized winter destination for the region. The secret is out. November, December, January or February are home to many outdoor winter attractions as well as many indoor ones.

|Some of the indoor venues to visit during the winter months include Merritt’s Aquatic Center with a pool, 2 x hot tubs, a sauna and a fully equipped fitness room. For all avid shoppers, Merritt boast’s a downtown hub full of shop’s, cafe’s, historical pubs, gift stores, services, and nail salons.

Time your visit right, and you can come a enjoy a local hockey game with a Junior Hockey Team – the Merritt Centennials . So… the question is, “What are you going to do in Merritt in the winter months?” The answer better not be a “Couch Potato”.

(Answer) While noticing that several people were asking me the same questions and advice. (Q4) What insights, purpose and power did you experience and or gain from writing this very self exposing tumultuous life events that most people would feel to vulnerable to share?

(Answer) Although I used to think vulnerability was a weakness. Realizing vulnerability is the greatest strength. In regards to taking your power back. After all Comedians make fun of themselves before others can. At the same time being open in my book, worked in a similar way. Completely being unaffected by those who knocked me down freed me. Notwithstanding it was the final step allowing me to be free leaving my past behind.

(Q5) Certainly you provide profound wisdom, incredible insights, valuable tips and simple exercises in order to avoid needless suffering throughout your book. What inspired you to have “Note To Self Exercises” in some of your chapters?

(Answer) Moreover you feel more empowered when you are actively doing something to help a certain situation. Also I find many people resonate with my personal stories. Additionally, I learn from my mistakes, while others need to physically do the work with a more hands-on approach. As a result, the exercises give an insight to what I did to overcome my struggles. I wanted to include the reader in this process so they could get the most out of my book. The title Note to Self: Empowerment has a double meaning. When you write down your answers to the exercises, they become your “notes to self” leading to empowerment.

(Q6) What started you into motivational speaking and your first seminar/event Trina?

(Answer) Firstly, I was always the shy person who hid behind my writing. I was absolutely terrified of public speaking! But back in 2015, someone desperately wanted to buy my book to help out her best friend. Because there are so many steps to writing/publishing a book it took longer than anticipated to publish because of some of the setbacks we faced. I did not want to rush publishing my book either.

Therefore I tried to think of another way to help her friend. I created a seminar called “Elevate Your Life”. Subsequently would be the fastest way to help, as well as a comfortable outing for both of them to enjoy. Funny how your passion to help someone can trump any fear of public speaking!!! The plan was to only do one seminar, but from that one event someone else offered me a speaking engagement and people have continued to need my help. Needless to say, I haven’t stopped.

(Q7) What can people expect from your seminar?

(Answer) Immediately you can definitely expect positivity, growth, inspiration and motivation. My seminar is all about elevating all areas in your life and lifting people up to the next level and beyond. (Q8) How did your daughter, Jasmine Stewart become a part of Elevate Your Life?

(Answer) We have always been a dynamic mother-daughter duo and she is practically a mini version of me. Jasmine has been around throughout most of my hardships, so she gained a lot of wisdom that way. Together we broke some vicious cycles and other generational destructive patterns, which is an area most people struggle with. Being a registered nurse, Jasmine is qualified to speak about health and healing. Together we can help others with their complete body, mind and soul connection. Moreover Jasmine really wanted to be a part of this particular seminar because she has such a strong tie to Merritt and I feel she will add even more value and inspiration.

(Q9) What made you decide to bring your seminar to Merritt?

(Answer) My dear friend Tania (Jasmine’s aunt) is from there. For the past couple of years after I held my seminar in Ontario, she would suggest that I bring my seminar to Merritt. She felt there is a huge need for what I have to offer since not very many motivational speakers go there. I know how it is like living in a smaller town and always having to travel for concerts and events, so it is nice when people come to them. I used to live in Merritt for a bit and Jasmine’s family is from there so it gave us even more reason to make the trip.

(Q10) Trina how can your seminar help the people of Merritt?

(Answer) I think my style will appeal to a close-knit town like Merritt. It will be pretty intimate so we can maximize growth and transformation. In addition to growing up in a small town in Northern Ontario, I also lived in Merritt for a bit so I understand the challenges, dreams and desires. Jasmine and I have a connection to Merritt and feel the attendees will really resonate with us. Furthermore, I think this will help us make a greater positive impact. I have traveled around the world learning from the top leaders in the personal growth and entrepreneurial industry, as well as, I have gained a lot of wisdom and insights through personal experience which is invaluable. We look forward to sharing all this and more with the people of Merritt.
