Established in 1986, this scenic ranch is nestled in a valley setting in the heart of B.C.’s prominent ranching country. The ranch is surrounded by impressive fishing lakes and thousands of acres of rolling terrain for picturesque trail riding and winter sports. A great way to experience Merritt Canada is from the back of a horse at A-P Guest Ranch Nicola Valley BC.

Andre Patry, owner of A-P Ranch, shared with us that he has been riding for 73 years. More impressively, 53 years of that stretch is right here in Merritt BC. The Patry’s left Quebec around 1966 and with a bit prospecting for the perfect ranch Andre found what was to become A-P Guest Ranch.

A-P Guest Ranch. Kitchen, Saloon, Dining area along with bunk rooms.

Importantly Andre and family at A-P Guest Ranch believe in providing 5 star treatment for all their guests.

For example safety is very important for their guests when embarking on a trail ride. With Andre’s years of experience dealing with horses he seems to have this magical ability to team a horse and rider up perfectly. The right temperament is required between a horse and rider for a maximum riding experience for both horse and rider.

In fact A-P Ranch is ideal for family outings, reunions, weddings, and for escaping the city for a weekend getaway!

Together with its 5 Star Hospitality A-P  Ranch also offers other outdoor adventures.

When was the last time you enjoyed a hay-ride, or have you even tried one of these sightseeing adventures. It is a great way to spend a fall day with the family. Why not make it a weekend getaway with your children and give them the ultimate experience of “Living Country” on a horse ranch like A-P Ranch.

In case you forget your “Cowboy” boots.

A-P Ranch provides more than a horse and some good times. They are ready to help you look the part as well. They have the cowboy boots to fit all sizes of feet and adventures. Riding boots are not only great for the ambiance but also for the safety of the rider.

For this reason alone A-P Guest Ranch is a great start for beginners as well as all levels of horseback riding. From families to seasoned riders the people at the ranch have the skills and equipment for a safe ride.

Nicola Valley horseback riding guides

With 73 years of experience Andre makes this look easy.

Indeed all of the horses at A-P Ranch are truly beautiful!

There is something special going on at A-P Ranch. Interestingly enough, you can see that more and more people are turning to horses for a connection with nature as well as a connection with themselves. Additionally Horses have been linked to helping people heal when dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, abuse, addiction, grief, and stress.

A-P Ranch is a hidden gem within the Nicola Valley. Hidden in the sense that it is located on the outskirts of the Nicola Valley in the wilderness backcountry of British Columbia. A great destination for company retreats, team building and motivational seminars.

Whether you love to go riding in the vast outdoors or relax and stay in for a night being treated to country cooking A-P Guest Ranch is truly the place for you.

Andre leads us to the “Range”

Especially with all its scenic beauty, its hard not to feel like your riding in the Old West of yesterday.

Surprisingly from Kamloops Purity Feed Ltd to A-P ranch is 92.3 km, average driving time 58 minutes. Also from Merritt’s Best Western Plus to the ranch is 26.5 km = 20 minutes driving time. If arriving from Vancouver British Columbia Canada it is only a little over a 31/2 hour drive, Kelowna just over an hour.

This is what 73yrs of experience looks like.

Amazing how one can connect with nature when on horseback.

From dessert grass to lush forest.

Riding on a perfect late summer day.

For the brave and more adventurous people, A-P Ranch also provides multi-day “Pack Trips”. These horseback riding adventures range from 3 days to 7 days. All you need to do is show up, saddle up and enjoy the experience.  My son and I along with other people hope to do a 3 day one in the fall.

Half-way through our trail ride we had about a 20 minute break to stretch our legs. I found it got harder to get back on my horse. But, I guess I am a natural, as there are stumps around to help with the saddle up process.

Of course after the trail ride” you can cool of with a drink in A-P’s Saloon.

Additionally Andre is an amazing artist.

Pictures do not do Andre’s art justice. Seeing his amazing work is truly an experience to see and enjoy. And I guarantee you wont leave with just one piece.

Broker- Owner – Claudette Edenoste

I had the privilege of sitting with Claudette Edenoste, the owner and Broker of Royal Lepage Merritt Realty in Merritt, BC.   Claudette has completed numerous educational upgrades in order to master her trade. She has a total of 18 years in the real estate business, including owning and brokering Royal Lepage Merritt for the past five years.

My visit took up better than an hour of her most valuable time. Not to mention it was her day off. But wow! She was very accommodating and I sure did get a lesson on Claudette’s management style. As well as an inside understanding of the trials and tribulations facing the Real Estate world of today.

Why Real Estate?

Claudette’s motivation for Real Estate is helping people. She says helping people find a home is exciting. At the same time, she experiences personal gratification when she sees, the happiness and excitement of the purchasers with their new home. Her feelings for the client selling their home mirrors her sentiments for the purchaser.

When asked, Why Merritt?

“Merritt has everything needed for a successful business, as well as a first class lifestyle.” (Claudette Edenoste)

It has a location that offers a country and small town lifestyle, including proximity to the larger Cities. In addition, it’s only two and a half hours from Vancouver. Merritt offers unlimited potential in a number of ways and has so much to give back. There’s a lake a day as long as you stay as well as a vast selection of outdoor recreation and adventure.

What Are The Advantages Doing Business In Merritt?

One of the advantages to owning a business in Merritt is, being a part of the business climate. Helping and being part of developing a rich and vibrant community is exciting.”

Contributing to the community identity, and being involved locally encourages community spirit. Additionally, being able to build a relationship with the majority of our clients is imperative. Community spirit is evident. As a result, the enthusiasm to help showcase Merritt’s attractions, proves we are a part of the heart of the community.

A number of dynamic, notable public events, are beginning to take hold throughout the community. Hopefully, the outside world can’t resist,  but notice the enthusiasm and participation of our citizens for initiating and attending our community events. Maybe it will finalize a new family’s decision to relocate to Merritt.

How Does The Local Social Atmosphere In Merritt Affect Your Real Estate Business?

“It’s a balance each individual community needs to determine.”

According to studies, a homeless shelter in an area can impact property values. However, a bad school in the neighbourhood has a greater negative impact, dropping home prices by more than 10%. At the same time if the housing is supportive, such as offering an array of services to those in need, property values can rise. The biggest social factor in our community, is lack of affordable housing which impacts our community in a number of ways.

How Does Environmental Issues In Merritt Affect Your Real Estate Business?

“Environmental issues can have a great impact on Real Estate. It can affect everything from its value to its livability.”

There are many environmental concerns. The main concerns for Merritt would include, natural geographic boundaries such as rivers and lakes. They can limit the land for development but at the same time add value to a neighbouring property.

Soil conditions can have an impact on development as well as influence run off issues and flooding hazards, which in some areas would affect the availability of land. Soil should also provide adequate drainage and be able to support the structure without slippage that can cause cracks or allow a whole slope to erode and slide.

What Kind Of An Impact Does Technology Have On Your Real Estate Business?

“There is continuous alteration in technology trends in the Real Estate Industry”.

The advancement in technology impacts the Real Estate market in various ways. With the ease of technology the work of the real estate agent as well as the work of the customer has become quite a bit simpler. The agreements that would normally take up considerable time are now done within seconds.

How Does The Legal and Political Environment Affect Your Real Estate Business?

“Decision making in larger cities and centres impact the market in rural areas.”

With some major changes to the components that assist in driving the market. The market has slowed considerably.  Higher taxes, foreign buyer taxes, interest rates as well as stricter mortgage qualifications contribute to the slower market. Furthermore in addition to qualifying for a mortgage, a mortgage stress test has been added. It is in order to insure the ability to be able to pay in the event of interest rates increasing. Not to mention the federal budget initiatives announced, will not have a positive effect on the market in 2019.

Another key point, that is important to realize is that, new rules for first time home buyers, does not help buyers in least affordable markets. Given these points, the program does not apply to a home over $500,000. Many of the details of this program are not clear.

In summary, the changes have had an instant negative affect on sales. One that is likely to continue for awhile.

Equally important to note, in 2018 the government banned Dual Agency in British Columbia. Above all the ban on dual agency takes away the power of the purchaser, to be able to deal with whom he likes or knows. In addition, it takes away the ability for the realtor to build an ongoing relationship with a vendor or a purchaser. To put it another way the purchaser does not have a choice in which realtor will represent him/her in their purchase.

“I have a team of fifteen employees with the highest of standards.”

My team are my role models. They are all happy and confident with their achievements, but continue to strive for bigger and better objectives. They send a consistent message, show respect and don’t take people for granted.

Tell Us About Your Customers?

“A big community shout out for the support of our last fundraiser. A garage sale with proceeds to the women’s shelter”.

Consequently our customers, notably some of whom are referred to us by a referral system, consist of out of town re-locators. They explicitly comment on our convenient location and emphasize easy access for a new comer to town. They especially compliment us on being a Canadian Company, including locally owned and having a reputation for reputable qualified, friendly employees and service.

All things considered we have a strong local customer base, that comparatively speaking, know us best outside of real estate as a company that cares and gives back to the community. As a result, they support us in many community initiatives such as food bank drives, and various fundraising events for various community groups.

What Is Your Ownership Management Style?

“Collaboration and input from the team is very important to me. I believe the team are very skilled individually. Their opinions and ideas, are considered before I make a final decision. It is best to involve everyone and having the team take ownership will result in the best decisions to be made.” (Claudette Edenoste)

Your Favorite Thing About Being An Owner?

Being a part of the Royal Lepage family is like belonging to an exclusive club. The company is 100% Canadian owned. At the same time, the real estate industry consistently defines and associates the Royal Lepage brand, with trust, integrity, and success, as well as support and collaboration.

I love being a part of my employees lives. Not only listening to there happy stories, but also possibly being able to help with their various trials and tribulations.

Not only am I a supportive leader but I am open to suggestions and make my decisions based on team collaboration.

What’s The Dream?

The perfect end to the dream for me would be that people understand the relevance and importance of having realtor representation. A system that would ensure that every vulnerable client is represented fairly. Including detailed knowledge of selling or purchasing.

What Advice Would You give To Your Younger Self Just Starting Out?

Enjoy the experience. Get to know your clients one on one and one by one. Don’t be rushed to get to the final point

The Chair Walk, Merritt BC

July 10, 2019 to August 7, 2019

“Chairs like you have never seen before”

Art in Merritt BC. Art in Merritt comes in all forms, shapes and sizes. There are art galleries for you to enjoy, craft markets where many different artists participate, as well as, various venues with live entertainment. Locals and visitors will also enjoy the “Chair Walk”, the latest addition to the art experience while exploring Merritt BC Canada.

How does the Chair Walk Work?

The Chair Walk is modeled after a self-guided walking tour. Many communities provide self guided art walks including Merritt and the Nicola Valley. The Chair Walk will soon be one of the many art experiences to enjoy alongside the Merritt Murals, Walk Of Stars and many others.

However, one should know, the Chair Walk is different than many other art exhibits because it is a fund raiser for the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council and the Nicola Valley Community Theatre Society . The Chair Walk has some unique twists and turns that are not found in your every-day conventional Art Walk. It will be well worth the walk.

The Chair Walk is an army of community minded artists coming together for a good cause by donating their time and talents to producing some amazing art creations in the form of chairs.  While the basis of the work is a common chair, there is nothing common about the finished results. But hold on! That is all we can tell you about it right now because it is a surprise. You will have to come to Merritt BC Canada this summer and take the walking tour to see the collection of creative chair masterpieces.

What will the chairs look like?

The Business Community is on board.

Of course, all this effort by the artists would be for naught if the businesses did not see this as a valuable event, not only for themselves, but for the whole town in fostering art in Merritt. You will find that the interesting thing is the large variety of businesses involved.  There are flower shops, restaurants, auto parts dealers, a bike shop, sportswear, gift shops and many others for you to visit. All with their own versions of chair art.

Making Money for Art in Merritt, BC

Whereas the artists and business are crucial, you will be the ones to determine the success of this event.

Each chair will be the subject of a silent auction

However, if you are not going to bid on a chair you can still help the cause. Each chair will have a piggy bank placed nearby where you can make a donation.  As a side note, the banks are fun to see as they come in all sizes and shapes too.

“Families, children, teens, seniors, singles, tourists, and couples are all encouraged to support this event as it will not only be a fun summer activity but also help make Merritt become a better community in which to live.” says Team Leader for the Chair Project, Shirley

Inviting Store Front promoting Art in Merritt

Art in Merritt is worth the effort

The Chair Walk will give you a great introduction to our wonderful little City.  While you travel to each venue you will pass by other attractions that might interest you,  such as the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

In addition,  if you are into museums visit the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives.  You will find great information on the local history including the Indigenous peoples of the region.  You can also take in the many murals of the country stars that have played at our annual summer music fest.

The Merritt Murals are another example of art in Merritt that is on public display. There are said to around 20+ murals depicting country music stars. All painted by Michelle Loughery.

Accommodations Galore!

While experiencing the Chair Walk you may find time flies by fast.  There are fifteen art sites spread out around town. Therefore, if you are from out of town you will want to consider staying over night.  Accommodations in Merritt are varied from first class hotels to camping in the wilderness.

What to expect with art in Merritt

You will see some amazing creations, you will feel the small town experience and you could win a prize at the same time.  Just get your passport stamped at all fifteen venues and you will be entered into the draw. You will walk away feeling proud that you participated in the Chair Walk  in Merritt.

My Best Western Room

You open the door to your room and “oh my gosh”, it is even better than you imagined.  THOSE BEDS LOOKED LIKE BIG FLUFFY PILLOWS!  Anoop, the Merritt accommodation manager and his family actually spent years researching sleep systems to get perfection.

I want to feel like I am away from my daily duties, all the normal stress and I want to feel like I am being catered to.  Spending hours in the pool, dipping once in a while into the hot tub, and then going back to the room to watch great TV channels and chill was perfect. Ramada Hotel

Grown to Suit Traveler’s Needs

When asked what makes staying at the Ramada Inn in Merritt special among places to stay in Merritt BC, hotel owner Gurpreet Sekhorn speaks from the perspective of growth. The hotel has grown to include everything the traveler looks for in places to stay in Merritt BC. “The construction of this hotel was a long time in the making. It literally took ten to fifteen years to get it to where it’s at today. We’re the original family that built it. We started with thirty rooms and no hot tub, no breakfast.”

It’s Got It All!

The Ramada has certainly grown! Today there is a hot tub, indoor swimming pool, sauna, and a water-slide. In addition, guests will find spacious continental breakfast room, a meeting room, a mobile office, a fitness room, and a comfortable lounge area in the lobby.

Rooms have also been added. These include suites, kitchenettes, and honeymoon suites with private hot tubs. Gurpreet exclaims, “It’s got it all!”.

We enjoyed our kitchenette, which was ideal for keeping snacks and beverages on hand. It was also very handy for the doggy bag from dinner at Nicola Sushi, which is just a short walk from the hotel.

Views–Inside and Out

While enjoying the swimming in the spacious pool area, one can enjoy the view outside and in. The mountain tops are visible through the large windows. The murals the decorate the walls and ceiling are a recurring theme throughout the hotel. They add a personal touch that is a pleasure to view. The fully equipped fitness room also affords a view of the mountains in the distance beyond the activity of the city.

Our room was a few steps away from a viewing area that tantalizes the outdoor adventurer! The mountain vista promises all kinds of activity! Merritt’s many trails, lakes, rivers and variation in topography make for easy access to all your adventures. From rolling grasslands to rocky knolls among pine forest, the fishing, mountain biking, bird watching, kayaking, hiking, paddle-boarding, and much more are great fun! Looking for gear rentals? The local bike shop, Breathe Bikes has mountain bikes, stand up paddle-boards, kayaks, snow shoes and x-country skis.

What do Guests Look For in Merritt?

When asked what information guests most often request, Gurpreet says that his guests are often stopping over in Merritt, and are in need of the local businesses. He and his staff are able to provide options for places to eat and stocking up on supplies. Merritt has everything for the weary traveler. Other than those types of essentials, Gurpreet notes that the outdoors are a big attraction. Of course, I couldn’t agree more! He comments that this is what brings people to Merritt to stay for extended periods.

Appeal of Places to Stay in Merritt BC

Gurpreet was born and raised in Merritt. He loves the small town appeal that Merritt provides for himself and his family. He has lived in California, but found himself drawn back to his hometown. Considering all that a place like California has to offer, Gurpreet’s example shows Merritt’s character as the hidden gem that most of its residents believe it to be.

Incredible Staff

Aside from the bricks and mortar amenities that the Ramada has to offer, Gurpreet praises his staff for making the Ramada what it is. He says the staff are incredible and have taken the success of their hotel to heart.

At The Knights InnMerritt Canada Accommodations

Last week a friend visited from out of town and I had no room at my place to put her up. I hunted for Merritt Canada accommodations and we decided to stay at the Knights Inn. Not only was it a good deal, it was fun visit too! The kitchen had a full-size stove, fridge and sink, plenty of space and was stocked with dishes and cutlery as well as pots and pans. The cupboards contained ample crockery, salt and pepper and, steak lovers take note, even a container of steak spice!

A Fun Evening

We sat at the table in our suite, drank tea, ate cookies and played a game involving cards and little sticks that I have never seen before. We had a lot of fun and plenty of laughs. I lost the game due to the distraction of my friend’s chocolate chip cookies! At least, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it1

Comfy Beds

We slept well that night, in fact, we both slept in! My friend, who claims she is very fussy about her bed and doesn’t sleep well in strange places, overslept by an hour. My bed was just as comfortable because I didn’t even hear the alarm!

A suite deal

“Merritt Canada accommodations” are easy to find in our small city but where does a family find something affordable? At the Knights Inn, that’s where! Not only will you save money on the accommodations, you can also save money by cooking your own meals in the well-equipped kitchen! This is a big plus for families! Take a suite with a well- equipped, spotless kitchen if you enjoy cooking your own meals, or even just some of them. Or perhaps you want to surprise a friend with a special dinner. Big changes at the Knights InnMerritt Canada AccommodationsMerritt Canada Accommodations

Owner Max Jiao, manager Kevin Ellefson and all his staff worked hard to make the Knights Inn, as Kevin puts it ” your home away from home”. Everything is very clean but in addition, Kevin tells me, “The employees take pride in their work”. It shows in the cleanliness of the accommodations they provide and in the improved reputation and attention the Knights Inn is receiving! This is all part of what makes the Knights Inn unique.

Remodelling the Knights Inn

A big part of these changes started with the remodelling. Some suites and rooms were rebuilt and redecorated while others were totally gutted and redone! It all looks very fresh and new. In addition to all this, there is a large green space in front of the suites for patrons to enjoy in good weather. Good job! When you are looking for “Merritt Canada accommodations” check out the Knights Inn!
