Welcome Craft Beer in Merritt BC – Empty Keg Brew House

Established in 2019, the brew house is a place where locals and visitors can enjoy locally brewed beers, brewed on site, on tap, and straight from the kegs. Hence why the story of Kyle and his wife Kelly – the owners of the brew house – is such a great story to tell.  It is a story about a dream and bringing it to life.

Beer, Snacks or Order In

Despite having their own snacks on hand, Empty Keg Brew House allows patrons to order out and bring it in. How cool is that! Yes, you can bring your lunch or dinner from another restaurant with you to the brew house and eat there plus order a beer. Having a pizza delivered to a place you are having a couple of drinks is a good example of community support at its finest. To boot,  Yaki Joe’s Pizza along with “Subway” are right next door.

Retirement Planning in Merritt, BC

Retirement planning through financial planning fundamentals

“While portfolio performance is important, it’s only one component of your overall financial well-being”

Retirement Planning in Merritt, BC – Retirement is that one point in our lives that we are all working towards. There are no two retirements that are the same. We will all have our own unique journey while living in the Merritt, Ashcroft, Kamloops and Logan Lake area. However, there is more to it than just putting money away for our working lifetime. The years right before our retirement are the most crucial to have “all the ducks in a row”.

There is more to our retirement planning in Merritt than investment performance

Many investment advisors will only focus on how your portfolio is projected to perform with your retirement planning. While portfolio performance is important, it’s only one component of your overall financial well-being. A comprehensive financial plan planning focuses on meeting your needs over both the short and long term. We need to create certainty in all areas of your financial future.

Confidence in our retirement planning through the Six Pillars of Financial Planning

You may ask, “one component?” Yes, retiring can be stressful and is more complicated than you think. Any solid retirement plan should be looking at up to six different components. I like to call these the “six pillars of financial planning.” Each pillar is based on a foundation of tax efficiency.

Pillar # 1 – Managing cash flow

We start off by examining the cash and credit requirements needed while working towards our goals. This is achieved through cash flow analysis, secured lending, residential lending and tax-efficient income planning. We need to ensure we are paying ourselves more each year. Why? Inflation eats at the purchasing power of each dollar every year.

Pillar # 2 – Preparing for the unexpected

Here we focus on developing comprehensive strategies that protect, preserve and provide for those that we care about. However, should something happen to us, we need to have a plan in place. Here we examine a few areas. What is in place to protect our income and wealth? On our passing, is there enough liquidity in our estate? Is our will up to date? Is the executor and power of attorney we selected up to the task? What would happen to our family if we were injured before retirement? What if a critical illness left us unable to earn a living for ourselves? Would our significant other be able to live comfortably if we needed long term care?

Pillar # 3 – Planning for major expenditures

This is a crucial step where we ensure we have a plan in place for making our goals a reality. This is where we look at credit/liquidity solutions, education planning, investment property structuring and even recreation property planning. What are your hobbies now? Car racing? Fishing? Or do you prefer the art or music scene? Most likely, what you do now for enjoyment you will do more of in retirement.

Pillar # 4 – Optimizing your retirement

You have just finished working thirty, forty and maybe even fifty years. As a result, you’ve built up a nice “nest egg” for yourselves. Here we focus on managing retirement risks and preserving your capital. We also need to create enough income to support your retirement needs and goals. The focus is on portfolio construction and oversight, total return strategies, guaranteed income solutions and withdrawal strategies.

Pillar # 5 – Sharing your wealth

Now is the time to create or review your existing estate plan. How would you like your legacy to live on? Here we choose the people and the causes that are important to you. After a lifetime of living and giving, certain charities and organizations become near and dear to us. This is our opportunity to give back through charitable giving. We also spend some time on the financial literacy of our beneficiaries. The goal is to ensure what you have worked so hard for is received and used in the wisest manner possible.

Pillar # 6 – Maximizing your business success

Finally we have come to pillar number six. However, it does not apply to all. There are many business owners and entrepreneurs in Canada. The planning needed here involves another layer of complexity. I like to implement strategies that synchronize and enhance your personal and business financial plan. We look at personal and corporate tax integration and optimizing corporate investments. We also look at pre-liquidity planning and ultimately business succession.

Don’t think or hope you’re doing things right, know it!

Retirement planning is a complicated process, I’m here to help!

Horseback riding is great exercise for the horse, and somewhat for yourself. The Merritt adventure offers a number of health and fitness benefits including the development of leg muscles, as well as, improving balance & posture. Most importantly, horseback riding reduces stress and refreshes your inner self. That is my take on the healthy benefits of horseback riding in the Nicola Valley.

Merritt BC Outdoor Activity 5: Mountain Biking

Merritt Mountain Biking Association

Located here in the Nicola Valley, the Merritt Mountain Biking Association is truly a great resource for mountain biking when you have arrived in the community.   Incidentally one of their primary goals is advocating for long term trail access by working with Government and community groups. Consequently, the MMBA was one of the first groups in the province to have an agreement with the crown to manage the trails they ride.  Get a hold of Jordan Pinto for more information. And dare to ride!

In Conclusion

Physical distancing refers to staying away from group gatherings and large public spaces where a virus can be easily spread, and keeping a distance of around two metres. Moreover we all must practice safety and “Wash your Hands”. Even though our country is opening up again, we all need to stay aware while enjoying our outdoor activities we love so much. Play safe. Play often.

Financial Planning In Logan Lake British Columbia

Holistic Financial Plans uniquely designed for each individual family

“I am a firm believer in saying “yes” to something and figuring it out afterwards. I am now performing webinars that can be viewed online because being elderly or having poor health shouldn’t stop people from learning.”

Financial Planning in Logan Lake – I generally spent 2-3 days per week working from home and creating financial plans for families and businesses here in Logan Lake, BC.  The other 2-3 days per week I spent meeting with people face to face, updating or creating plans with families and businesses in the surrounding areas. An average week I would find myself in Kamloops, Merritt, Cache Creek or Ashcroft meeting with people who desire advice and guidance on how to grow, preserve or protect their net worth.

Financial Planning in Logan Lake - we come to you

Warm weather is here! Time to stretch the legs!

Social Distancing for Financial Safety

However, social or physical distancing is the “new norm” for the moment. Meeting face to face with families and business owners right now to perform financial planning is difficult in some situations, but not for all. Going from home to home in Logan Lake, BC at this time is challenging. With some of my clients being elderly and/or immune compromised, I’ve been focusing more on phone calls and video meetings. I’m not worried too much about my own health, I don’t believe I would be at risk of it affecting me that greatly. I find myself more worried about unintentionally spreading a sickness to someone else. I’ve been taking precautions to ensure I stay distanced from my clients, whether they are new or existing clients. I use my pen, you use yours. Interestingly enough, pens aren’t used a whole lot these days. They might be making a come back.

Change Came Quickly to Ensure Safety for All

I quickly learned I needed to adapt to this ever changing landscape. Soon, I found myself in the middle of March. However, due to COVID 19, I stopped meeting face to face in the beginning of March as things began to change. Before COVID19 I had never hosted a meeting on Zoom before. I had attended multiple meetings but that was it. My wife, Jennifer and I have a busy home with 7 children ruling the roost. Creating financial plans in an office at my parents house in Logan Lake, BC was a normal thing to do.  However, my 89 year old grandfather lives with them as well. Because I could not risk somehow transmitting COVID19 to him, I had to make a change to my own process.

financial planning logan lake

Home office in a hurry, I sometimes have little visitors.

Financial Planning from Home in a Hurry

Rumors and discussions with my co workers in Kamloops, BC were leading to the temporary closing of our office. With this out of the picture I had to improvise. I did some quick measurements of our bedroom and re-arranged our furniture to make my new home office. I purchased a desk from Staples and comfortable chair from Jysk in Kamloops, BC. Now I could continue working from home performing financial planning in Logan Lake, BC.

Digital Meetings for the First Time

Knowing I had to figure this out, and quickly, I performed a Zoom meeting with my parents just to test it out. We needed to connect anyways to review their financial plan and ensure that their retirement was still solid. Because this market volatility that was happening throughout the global economy, we needed to confirm the planning was still on target. Learning how to create and schedule a Zoom meeting, inviting people to that meeting and running a meeting was a neat learning experience. Over the past few weeks, I’ve held multiple meetings now with my clients and with some new clients also through utilizing this valuable communication tool.

Seminars On Hold, Moving On To Webinars

With restrictions on how many people can now come together, I cancelled all the seminars I had planned. However, I still wished to explain the benefits of financial planning to my community and far beyond. Over the past few months I had worked with Community Futures – Nicola Valley and the Logan Lake WHY (Wellness – Health – Youth). With my new found wisdom, I jumped immediately into Zoom webinars. I am a firm believer in saying “yes” to something and figuring it out afterwards. I am now performing webinars that can be viewed online because being elderly or having poor health shouldn’t stop people from learning. Those that are willing to learn more about financial planning can do so from the comfort of their own home.

Financial Planning in Logan Lake, or British Columbia, Has Not Changed

What I do for families and businesses, as well as, financial planning in Logan Lake, Merritt, Kamloops, Cache Creek, Ashcroft, has not changed. The process remains the same. No adventure begins by only entering the starting point into our GPS. First, it’s important to get an accurate picture of where we are now. Second, it is important to know exactly what your life and business goals are. In conclusion, we must ask yourselves, “is something as important as our financial well being worth taking a wrong turn?”

Remembering Merritt BC Summer Music Events

Nicola Valley Summer Time Fun Will Be Back

COVID19 may have postponed our Merritt BC summer music events but it will never take away our memories.

The COVID 19 pandemic has cancelled our Merritt BC summer music events. And, boy, do we have some music classics here in the Nicola Valley like Bass Coast, Rockin’ River Music Festival, Open Mic Night and Gary Copper at the Adelphi Hotel to mention a few. However, it would not feel right to write a blog about remembering summer music events without mentioning Spirit Square, music in the park, and the Old Time Fiddlers playing at our local street market. As a result, no country music event blog would be complete without mentioning our very own cowboy crooner Bobbie Garcia,  who may just pop up at any of our music events at anytime.

Take the time to check out “Cooper Country” post COVID 19

Merritt BC’s oldest heritage Hotel, the Adelphi Hotel, is home to one of Canada’s and Merritt’s country icons, Gary Cooper. The group plays weekly to a growing collection of avid fans while welcoming their friends from all over the world to get up on stage and jam along with them. Therefore, it will especially be nice to witness some good ole’ country music again sometime in the future.

When we get pass this pandemic, be sure to attend “Open Mic” at Kekuli Café and support local artists

Whether you live in Merritt or stopping for gas at the Seven-Eleven across the street from the Kekuli Café, there is nothing that connects more with locals than locals sharing their love for music. We hope, soon, weekends at the Kekuli Cafe will open up again and fill the air with music.  Furthermore, the many Open Mic Music fans like Doug, Donna and Mary Dickie (who is in her 90s) cannot wait to pick this up again.

Due to your love of Country, the Rockin River Fest was scheduled again for Jul 30 – Aug 2 this year of 2020. The headliner this year was Keith Urban. However, things have changed since COVID 19 arrived in full force. Now there is a pent up energy for country music again and so we believe next year it is going to be epic. The Rockin’ River Music Fest is a B.C. family-owned and operated country music festival that takes place annually, on the BC Day long weekend, in Merritt, BC. See you in 2021!

“The Bass Coast community came together to raise funds to support the host town of the festival. The generosity of the community was astonishing,” said Bass Coast founders Andrea Graham and Liz Thomson in a statement.

Importantly all funds were raised through two charitable initiatives. First with a GoFundMe campaign that surpassed its initial fundraising goal of $15,000 to total $21,100. Secondly with a music compilation initiative which raised $1000 donated to the Nicola Valley Food Bank. Bass Coast Festival has announced all donations to go to the Merritt Rotary Disaster Relief Fund and 6  local Indigenous bands.  to aid relief efforts after the devastating floods of November 2021. The Bass Coast Mission Statement is “Innovative, Creative, Experience.” We aim to weave this concept into every aspect of the festival and into every position on the team. They have called the community of Merritt home since 2013. While having been  postponed twice, in 2020 and 2021. Exciting it is that this year will feature 150 performers from all parts of the world, performing on  four immersive stage environments. Furthermore, with over 50 interactive art installations and a range of workshops.

“The past two years have had plenty of ups and downs.” says Graham. “Each challenge has presented new opportunities to think creatively and collaboratively. We’re thrilled to be returning in 2022 and connecting further with the Merritt community.”

Truly Worth Noting

Impressively, Bass Coast was awarded “Best Boutique Festival” the year before the pandemic from renowned DJ Mag. An England -based monthly magazine that is dedicated to dance music. Importantly, DJ Mag, wrote “With a focus on art, well-being and, of course, bass-heavy beats, Canadian getaway Bass Coast claims this year’s Best Boutique Festival crown.”

Featured Art Bass Coast. Photo by Tania Stewart

Reflecting back on my 2019 Bass Coast experience, I am reminded that the theme in 2019 was “Duality”.

Past, Future
Journey, Destination
In a world of duality
Where opposite forces exist
In nature, in ourselves
Silence, Sound
In contrast, in balance
What dark is to light

Bass Coast Newbie

It is important to note that this was the first time I experienced Bass Coast in the Nicola Valley. Therefore, having experienced many different festivals throughout Canada, this Merritt festival was a whole new experience of art and music.  Consequently, walking through the front gates, I was transformed into a forest full of wonderment. The abundance of lights, sights, and sounds welcomed me with open arms.

Nicola Valley’s Summer Heat

It gets hot during the summer in the Nicola Valley. In fact, so hot, that many cool off in the ” Coldwater River” during the hottest times of the day when attending the festival. In other words, the temperatures can reach 30 degrees during the day and it is always a good idea to wear a hat and have sunscreen handy.

To illustrate “Bass Coasts” success.

Moreover Bass Coast started in 2009 in Squamish BC. As a result of its success the Merritt festival outgrew the space, therefore moving the event in 2013 to its new home in Merritt, BC.  It is here, in the Nicola Valley, that Bass Coast took off.

Bass Coast has become the quintessential west coast bass music festival. To sum it up, if you know 5 or 50 names on the lineup card you’re guaranteed to discover something new after a weekend of sun and music.

Merritt BC vs. Los Angeles California

As I contemplated my cancelled trip to see a NHL hockey game, I wanted to see how different Merritt BC was with Los Angeles California?

When comparing the tale of two cities it all depends on how you look at things.

My Son and I had planned a trip from Merritt BC to Los Angeles, California to watch the Vancouver Canucks play the Los Angeles Kings but the Covid-19 outbreak got in the way.  This got me thinking about Merritt and deciding how it stacks up against Los Angeles.  So I set out to compare Merritt, BC vs Los Angeles, California.

“What a great idea ,Dad!”–Steve

The Travel Time Differences

The major difference is obviously population.  Merritt rings in at 7,200 while Los Angeles is slightly larger  at 4 million.  This difference does impact a few things such as traffic.  Whereas you can travel anywhere in Merritt in five minutes it takes a little longer in LA.

Temperature Difference

LA’s temperature averages 22 degrees Celsius for the year but Merritt Canada only achieves these temperatures from late Spring to early Fall.

1. Hockey Arena Similarities

Both communities have an ice arena.  The Nicola Valley Memorial arena has about 750 seats and holds 1,000 if you add in standing room and the beer garden.  The Staples Center in Los Angeles holds 20,000+.  The Nicola Valley Memorial Arena is home to the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials, the longest continually run franchise in the BCHL.  The Staples Center is the home of the Los Angeles Kings.

Staples Center

Merritt's Arena

Nicola Valley Memorial Arena

2.Beaches

Both communities have beaches.  However the beaches of LA are connected to nearby communities and therefore stretch out for miles.  Merritt’s beaches are on Nicola Lake.

Los Angeles Beaches

Venice Beach, Los Angeles

Merritt Beaches

Monk Park Beach

3.  Amusement Parks

Both communities have amusement parks.  Los Angeles’s park is probably a little more famous than Merritt’s.  However, when you are comparing Merritt, BC to Los Angeles , California there will be some differences due to scale.  Anyway here is the visual.

Rotary Park Playground

Disney’s Famous Castle

4.  Waterfront Walking Paths

The Home Stretch beside the Coldwater River

The “Boardwalk” at Venice Beach is a very popular spot.  On one side you have the amazing beach and  the beautiful ocean.  Whereas, on the other side you have all the funky shops that have kept the sixties alive.  Merritt’s waterfront walk is along the Coldwater River.  The river winds through a lovely grove of  trees.  On the opposite side are parks and large parcels of land (horses anyone). You can see there is a bit of difference in the number of people taking advantage of the two different walks.

Venice Beach Waterfront Boardwalk

5.  Higher Education

UCLA Campus

NVIT Campus

When comparing Merritt, BC to Los Angeles, California you have to consider higher education.  Los Angeles has UCLA with  a population of around 40,000 students.  Besides Undergraduate degrees it offers Masters and Phd degrees.  Merritt, on the other hand, has NVIT which has a student population of about 1200.  Its focus is on Indigenous studies.  All are welcome.  There are a handful of undergraduate degrees but no masters or Phd programs.

6.  Local Government

Both communities provide services to their citizens through their municipal governments.  As an example both governments provide fire, police, roads, parks, recreation, water, sewer etc.  Los Angeles provides these services to its 4 million citizens at a cost of 9.9 Billion dollars or about $2,475 per person. Merritt provides its citizens these services for $17 million or about $2,361 per person.

There is clearly one area in which the services provided are different.  With LA’s average temperature being 22 degrees Celsius the chance of snow is very remote while Merritt experiences snow every year!

LA

LA City Hall

Merritt Civic Plaza

It’s a Wrap!

While there are some differences between Merritt, BC and Los Angeles, Ca we can see by this deep and thorough analysis that there is very little difference between the two.  So instead of spending big bucks going to LA you can come to Merritt and have lots of fun.

COVID 19 in Merritt BC

The Nicola Valley hunkers down in self isolation creating some quality time for self reflection and some random musings.

Merritt British Columbia, Canada and the COVID 19 pandemic has created a new normal.

COVID 19 in Merritt BC – Never before, could we have imagined that the community of Merritt BC Canada, the country of Canada and the tourism industry would be brought to a stand still. Life as we knew it changed in just under 2 months ago. Consequently, I will be the first to admit we were caught off guard. Did not see this storm coming.

The Realities of COVID 19 in Merritt BC

Not long ago tourists were planning summer vacations, public music events, road trips and adventures to  the Nicola Valley. Today, we are cancelling vacations, taking up long lost hobbies, learning new technology, self educating, working from home, as well as, maintaining social distancing when we go out into our communities. It is a brand new world.

“This is not an equal opportunity pandemic. … Marginalized communities will be disproportionately impacted.” — Katherine Scot, a senior economist with Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

Social distancing in the Nicola Valley

Stars of Self Isolation

The crisis named COVID 19 has shown many of us here and around the world who the real heroes are in our country. Our musicians, actors, sports stars are no different than us during this COVID 19 era. They too are in self isolating. They too are in lock down.

The Real Hero’s in Our Communities

Look who has emerged as our community heroes. The grocery store employee, the guy pumping your gas, the delivery person who brings you your pizza, the truck driver who stocks our stores, the person who picks up our garbage,  our health care workers and others. A big “Virtual Group Hug” goes out to all who are keeping the lights on in our communities.  They are the foot soldiers fighting this battle on the front lines.

front line workers in merritt

Support our front line health care workers.

Merritt BC is Not Immune

In Merritt BC it may look like COVID 19 is non existent. Just because we are not seeing and hearing the numbers of COVID 19 cases in the Nicola Valley or in the Thompson-Okanagan region, does not mean it is not here. Consequently, lets remind ourselves  that all it takes is one carrier of the virus to take down a community. Why take a chance and roll the dice with the Devil himself?

Grow Some Manners

Fortunately and unfortunately I have seen the true colors in some people come out during COVID 19. Mostly it is all good, some not so good. The good is most of us our respecting each others space as we self isolate. Sad, is that not everyone is being kind. How people can be so rude and disrespectful boggles my mine. For example, while getting groceries I witnessed a man swear at a Senior in a grocery store because she said he was too close to her. Valid right, not to mention it is her life that is at risk. How would anyone take offence to that comment? I was disgusted in the man. The lack of respect was unacceptable. I spoke up and then was told to %^$# as well. The senior smiled and said thank you.

Be thankful Merritt. We are Lucky

Regardless of your opinion, real or not, that is beside the point.  The point is we are one of the lucky ones… so far. That is something to be grateful for as that means our friends and family are in a safer situation than in other areas of the country and world. Recently I am reminded how lucky we really are to have dedicated nurses and doctors in Canada. I have heard and seen the honking, and beeping cars, trucks, ambulances and police as they drive by saluting the Nicola Valley Hospital.  It is a beautiful thing.

Be Kind During Self Isolation

Social distancing to me is an opportunity to show my respect and love for our seniors and elders, my friends and family and to all the people in my community and Canada.  I have a renewed admiration for those that keep positive in this very challenging time. I get it. It is hard.  I am practicing self isolation too because I do not want to be part of the problem. By the same token I want to be part of the solution. So, I do my best and phone my friends and loved ones regularly because I care and do not want them to to be engulfed in a dark world surrounded by loneliness.

Who are your Self Isolation Heroes?

I believe we need to look and start acknowledging the Nicola Valley self isolating heroes more. Why not push out some positive messages of active people in the community who are holding back their social urges because it is the right thing to do. Examples of good people doing such a thing are people like Tom and Shirley Reynolds right here in Merritt BC.

“It’s a time to look forward, not behind. I think it’s timely to think ahead. Yes we’re faced with another global health challenge, but every day will be a little better than the day before. We’re looking forward.” — Darrell Fox, Terry Fox’s brother, on the 40th anniversary of the start of the Marathon of Hope.

Tom and Shirley Reynolds practicing self isolation

This is a Test on Humanity

The only way I see us coming out of this is to continue to practice self isolation, social distancing and being kind to each people. When this is all said and done, many must ask themselves, “Was I a good person during COVID 19?” and “Did I help the problem or did I contribute to it?” In conclusion, it is times like these when one’s morals, ethics and integrity are measured. How do you measure up on the humanity scale?

Merritt BC Canada in the Winter

“Go were no man have hardly gone before.” Tania Stewart, eco blogger with Experience Nicola Valley

Merritt in the Winter can become a top destination point for Tourism in Canada.

Make Merritt in the winter your destination. Why not? There are no crowds. Outdoor winter adventures are plentiful like xc skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and snowshoeing.  Why not make the Nicola Valley your “New” winter spot during the snow season.  Merritt is alive and well in November, December, January and even into March in the mountains. Indeed just ask Jason Pake and his wife Trina Hall along with daughter Jasmine Ashley who Experienced the Nicola Valley in November.

The Nicola Valley under some Living Skies

Albeit The Nicola Valley it so Beautiful!

Taking part in winter activities has so many benefits. For example, a good winter activity can help ease the winter blues while boosting your body’s immune and respiratory systems.  And… if you have children, you already know that winter adventures tires them out so they go to bed sooner and sleep better during the night. The result is a quieter, more romantic and peaceful cuddle around a fire with your other half.

To clarify, Merritt is an ideal base camp, for day tripping.

Destination Merritt in Winter

Jason Pake with Trina Hall.

Make Merritt BC your base camp when exploring the region. Merritt sits at the junction of 4 major highways heading north, south, east and west. Ideal for winter day trips. For instance leave early and spend a day hiking in Whistler BC. It is a 4 hour or so drive to Whistler from Merritt BC.  Plus image the time and money saved with restaurants , accommodations and convenience when Merritt is your base camp.

Accommodations in Merritt, like the Best Western Plus , Comfort Inn, and others in the Nicola Valley provide top amenities and services at a fraction of the price.  (Here is a link to a full list of accommodations and contact information)

Additionally taking in Merritt’s Activities.

Bowling in Merritt

Friday Night’s in Merritt BC can be a lot of family fun too at the local Bowling Alley. Bring your “A” game though! As a matter of fact Merritt’s Bowling Alley has provided decades of “Fun” for many generations. There are 8 lanes  5-pin bowling along with the venue being fully licensed.

Nicolanes Bowling is open everyday of the week for a lot of fun with friends, family, or colleagues. For instance, go bowling for staff parties, birthdays, family reunions, or just a night out on the town.  That is come meet new people while being active. Truly “Bowling is fun for ALL ages!”

Explore Merritt in the Winter

Before making Merritt your winter destination, plan out your Nicola Valley winter activities – outdoors and indoors.  This includes day-tripping Merritt’s neighboring communities, visiting our art and culture venues and events, as well as, exploring any of our top notch xc skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing destinations.

Sharing nature with your family!

Plan a winter adventure and then the after party. After a winter hike, skiing cross country trails, shredding snow in a snowmobile or sitting back in your ice shack ice fishing why not finish your day around a cozy campfire sharing stories. Or… a bonfire like our photo.

“Winter activities, like snowmobiling, xc skiing and snowshoeing will release some of that pent-up energy, and cause your body to burn fat.”

You should know… one of BC’s top snowmobiling destinations is just up the road from Merritt BC. Snowmobiling around Merritt is truly spectacular. It is

called “The Coke” which is short for Coquihalla Highway. I am going on a limb and say, “Merritt is the “Powder Capital of Snowmobiling in BC”.

Consequently, just south of Merritt are the Kane Valley XC Ski Trails. “Cross Country Skiing” at Kane Valley is a must for all lovers of the winter backcountry. Bring a camera for the picturesque scenery along the trails and, yes, there are warming shelters along some of the xc ski routes as well.

Even more impressive, is our four-pronged approach to winter adventures here in the Nicola Valley. Rounding out at #3 is the  “Ice Fishing” opportunities in the region. We enjoy over 200 lakes in the area. Many are ice fishing lakes. And #4 is snowshoeing. Pick a backcountry road or head to Kane Valley.

“Before heading out for a winter activity, be sure to dress accordingly — ideally, in layers, and let someone know where you are going and always carry emergency back up supplies, ” says me, Tania Stewart.

Just So You Get It.
Merritt BC is centrally located.

Accommodations are affordable in the Nicola Valley compared to many of the surrounding bigger cities and communities.  Merritt has “Base Camp” written all over it.  Enjoying sightseeing day trips without the hassle or added expense of moving from one accommodation to another is a big plus when exploring from Merritt. Spending a lot of your time unpacking and packing up, over and over again, can be a big time waster on any vacation.

Day Trip Destinations

Nearby Kamloops is 87 km with one hour travel time from Merritt. Here is the plus. There are 2 main roads leading to Kamloops from Merritt. The quick and fast Kamloops connector (Highway 5). It is an up-and-over highway through the mountains. The other route (Highway 5A), is a little bit longer, many say more scenic, cuts and snakes its way around the mountains passing by lakes, ranches and grasslands. It makes for a perfect day trip with two routes of scenery.

Kelowna Day Trip

Sun Peaks Resort.

Kelowna, best accessed from Highway 97C,  is just over the mountains to the south of Merritt BC. The distance to Kelowna is 127 km and about only 1 hr 36 minutes away. In Kelowna there are 2 ski resorts to enjoy as a winter day trip – Big White Ski Resort and the other is Silver Star.

Feel the Need to Ski?

Sun Peaks Resort and Harper Mountain.

Beyond is Hope BC.

Othello Tunnels

While the drive is spectacular. Its only 120 km – 1 hour drive from Merritt to Hope BC. Incidentally Hope has many attractions. Many with no crowds and most are very outdoorsy. Take the Othello Tunnels. It is a series of tunnels through mountains over a gorge providing scenery and some history. You know what tunnels mean right? They can be enjoyed in sun, rain and snow and you stay dry.

Winter in Merritt BC

Notably the Nicola Valley is becoming a better recognized winter destination for the region. The secret is out.  November, December, January or February are home to many outdoor winter attractions as well as many indoor ones.

|Some of the indoor venues to visit during the winter months include Merritt’s Aquatic Center with a pool, 2 x hot tubs, a sauna and a fully equipped fitness room. For all avid shoppers, Merritt boast’s a downtown hub full of shop’s, cafe’s, historical pubs, gift stores, services, and nail salons.

Time your visit right, and you can come a enjoy a local hockey game with a Junior Hockey Team – the Merritt Centennials . So… the question is, “What are you going to do in Merritt in the winter months?” The answer better not be a “Couch Potato”.

Moving to Merritt BC.

My husband and I moved to the Nicola Valley near Merritt BC Canada. We looked at a map.  Saw that Merritt was  not far from the lower mainland and close enough to visit family when we wanted. Additionally, we also moved to Merritt  because it was just the right size. The community was equally big enough to satisfy all our needs but not too big to be overly congested.

Traditionally a quilt is made of three layers: a quilt top, batting, and a bottom layer. The top and bottom layers are made of fabrics stitched together. Batting (usually made of cotton or something similar) is the insulation that makes the quilt warm. None the less, a quilt takes time and dedication.

Patchwork quilts were common in areas where women had few resources to make them. Using leftover fabric from earlier projects, old clothing, or other cheap materials was very common.
