This Is My Happy Place

How Do You Get Them All To Look?

However, it is important to remember to do your best and have fun. Don’t take yourself too seriously. I feel like I always have to remind myself of that fact also. Just remember that you are capturing moments of happiness. Its ok if someone’s maybe looking off into the distance, or having a giant belly laugh. You’ll want those pictures maybe more so as you age.

My Secrets to Fall Photos in Logan Lake

One trick I have learned, at least, when taking photos of my kids, is sometimes I will just hit record with my iPhone and film them posing. Assuredly just talking to them, ask them to smile or say a joke will most likely get me the results I’m looking for. Usually in that split second of me saying smile they all do. Then I go to the video and drag my finger along over the pause button. If I find a good “pause” with all of the kids looking and smiling. I will then tap the photo to take off the boarders, and just screen shot it. Ta-Da! Easy photo!

And Together They Built A Life That They Loved

With out a doubt I always use Costco for all my photo developing needs. Weather its getting a birth announcement together, making photo books, or just developing photos. Don’t be surprised if you see some of these photos on our Christmas card this year. Assuredly  making photobooks to gift to the family at Christmas has been a lovely tradition to hold onto. In addition I always tweak my photos with an photo editing app. I love using the Lightroom App on my Android. Just because I enjoy the stock presets that they have and the fact that I can create and save all my own presents for free. Photo editing is a great way to add more light, play with shadows, make colors more vivid.

Merritt BC Birdwatching & Wildlife Watching from Home

Photo’s of Nature  During Covid19 Merritt Canada

“From my home, my backyard, there is a whole world of activity opening up to my eyes that I may have taken for granted before Covid 19.”

Merritt BC birdwatching and wildlife watching from my backyard in the Nicola Valley has really opened my eyes up to how fortunate we are as Merrittonians.  However, being isolated during Covid19 may make a person a bit “Bat Crazy” therefore finding things to do can be tricky especially when you have children.

Merritt BC birdwatching through Photography

Grab your camera, phone or art paint and head outdoors into Mother Nature is one option to consider. Almost every day I spend a couple of hours taking photo’s of nature during Covid19 in Merritt, Canada.” I like to experience the beauty of the Nicola Valley backyard “Critters” during isolation through photography.

Finding things to occupy yourself during this time can be trying at times. I combine my passion for photography and nature to be my therapy during the pandemic. Consequently, I often find myself wandering my backyard for a photo moment. Admittingly I am not a pro at taking photos, but these pictures will forever be a reminder of this time in my life.

Albeit when standing guard for your peanuts!

Types of squirrels

Canada is home to 22 different types of squirrels. Six of these are ground-dwelling, four live in trees, and two are varieties of flying squirrels. Can you count flying squirrels as Merritt BC birdwatching? Probably not. Common ground squirrels have thin tails and hibernate through winter, while bushy-tailed tree squirrels are active year-round.

Life as a Squirrel

Tree squirrels build nests, living amongst branches and within tree hollows. Ground squirrels do the opposite. They dig  burrows to reside underground. All squirrels use their tails for shade during warm weather, warmth during the winter, and balance when climbing or jumping. Here is a link to learn more about squirrels –  Backyard friends.

They help plant trees

While they can be a nuisance to gardeners thanks to their fondness for flower bulbs, squirrels play an important role in forest regeneration.  As winter approaches, squirrels prepare by burying nuts and seeds to help see them through. Inevitably, some of their stash will be forgotten and germinate in the spring.

The crow family (Corvidae) is a large family of birds that includes jackdaws, choughs, jays, magpies and nutcrackers as well as crows and ravens. The crow family represents one of the most advanced stages of avian evolution, showing, for example, a highly developed intelligence and a complex social organization.

Crows will jointly defend space with a lifelong mate and displays their status with the rest of the flock, as well as, warns all fellow crows when danger is afoot. Furthermore, here is another interesting fact,  crows recognize human faces!

Merritt BC Canada backyard birdwatching includes Robins!

Robins feed extensively on insects, insect larvae and earthworms but also consume fruits and berries in season and are considered bird pests in many areas. The robin is widely found in many parts of Canada. Birdwatchers tell us the robin is migratory in most parts of the country however, it may winter or attempt to winter in some of the southern parts of most provinces.

The call of the Morning Doves

The mourning dove gets its name from its low, mournful “ooo-Ahhh crooo-ooo-ooo” call, though other calls include a low, rapid coo when in distress and a rapid, high wing whistle when the birds take flight.

Deer are always welcome to visit during Covid19.

Being a deer is an even-toed ungulate, deers are grazers  and browsers (eating shrubs and woody plants). Deer also have a four-chambered stomach making them ruminants. The process of ruminal fermentation allows deer to partially digest complex carbohydrates that other mammals cannot – this means that almost all vegetation is available to deer as a food source.

Paska Lake is camping near Merritt BC

Paska Lake – Shirley Reynolds Photo

Camping Near Merritt BC Canada

Paska Lake is a good reason to come camping near Merritt BC

“Paska Lake is just one of almost two hundred lakes that are within an hours drive from Merritt. This is one of the reasons I love living in Merritt.”

I have talked about Camping near Merritt BC before where I outlined the pleasures of camping in the Kane Valley at Harmon Lake. This time we will travel 45 minutes north of Merritt to Paska Lake.  You will find the turn off to the lake on Hwy 97D between Lac Lejeune and Logan Lake.  You will travel up a narrow road that could use a few of the potholes filled.  However the travel is well worth it like most lakes when camping near Merritt BC.

The Forestry Site is Magnificent for Camping near Merritt, BC

This forestry site is on a gentle hillside and contains around 50 sites.  Each site is easy to back into and gives you stunning views of the lake.  When we arrived we were lucky to find a lakeside site available which we grabbed right a way.  The view was exquisite from this vantage point.

Camping Near Merritt,BC- Bring on the Birds

Geese Familu

Geese Family – Shirley Reynolds Photo

One of our favourite activities is to watch for the various birds in our area.  However, we are not birders and therefore could not necessarily name all those birds that we noticed.  Having said that, we had no difficulty in naming the Canadian geese that were hanging around the lake shore.  This lovely family came by our site every morning at the same time.

The loons were too far out to get their picture but we enjoyed watching them dive and then trying to guess where they would show up.  I am amazed at how far they can travel under water.  Their haunting sound reminds you that you are not in the big city any more.

You can’t beat the food when camping

The best part about camping is the food.  For some reason everything just seems to taste better outdoors.  For example, one of our go to breakfasts is blueberry pancakes.  It seems like the berries are fresh picked.  Bacon is tasty wherever it is served but is still better when camping.

Breakfast is part of camping near merritt bc

Biking while camping near Merritt, BC

One of my favourite activities when I go camping is to go for a spin on my bike.  The Paska Lake area has lots of trails and logging roads to explore.  However, this trip I decided to tour the little community just down the road from our campsite.

Since I am now in my seventies I find riding my bike uphill has become a real chore.  However, my friend Travis Fehr at Breathe Bikes came up with the perfect solution. He turned my bike into an electric bike by installing an e-bike system.  Now I don’t care about hills anymore because my new system assists with the hills.

Tom's bike

Tom’s electric bike – Tom Reynolds photo

With my electric assist on I was a able to pedal from the lakeside up to the road with ease.  Around a kilometre from the campground is a group of cottages.  While cottages are disappearing, to be replaced with monster houses, this area still has the classic cottage.

Other Activities at Paska Lake

This lake is great for swimming.  I was surprised that the lake temperature was actually decent considering it is a high mountain lake.  Anyway, the kids in the campsite next to us spent a lot of time in the water.

Of course camping near Merritt, BC would not be complete without fishing.  There is nothing better than rainbow trout done on the grill.

When we were there the weather was perfect for kayaking as there was no wind. We were able to travel around the lake with ease.

Camping near Merritt, BC is endless,

Paska Lake is just one of almost two hundred lakes that are within an hours drive from Merritt.  This is one of the reasons I love living in Merritt.  If you can’t be as lucky as I am you can always come and spend a little time in the Nicola Valley on your holidays.  Once you do you will want to come back again and again.

Being centrally located, Merritt mountain biking offers a wide range of biking trails for newbies and extreme mountain bikers alike. In addition, Merritt tends to experience mild winters with little snowfall and warm, dry, sunny summers making Merritt a year round mountain biking destination most years.  The best thing about Merritt British Columbia is it is a great base camp for mountain biking in nearby areas like the trails in  Kamloops, Kelowna, and the Fraser Valley. A fact that adds to the shine that Merritt is a great destination for multiple mountain biking adventures within BC. But it all starts here. Experience the Nicola Valley on a mountain bike!

Consequently, the MMBA was one of the first groups in the province to have an agreement with the crown to manage the trails we ride. The MMBA has signed a new agreement with the Province in 2012. Hiking Merritt, BC

Kentucky-Alleyne Provincial Park

A Walk in the Park

I have talked about hiking near Merritt, BC before but focused on the trail network within the City of Merritt. Therefore this time I want to take you further afield to Kentucky-Alleyne Provincial Park.  Our park destination is a mere 20 to 30 minute drive from downtown depending on traffic. (Just kidding, there is no traffic in Merritt).  Kentucky-Alleyne Provincial Park is located off highway 5A just passed Aspen Grove.

Kentucky Lake-Hiking Trail near Merritt, BC

I have chosen this trail because it is relatively easy.  However, those who are looking for a greater challenge you can check out a book by local author, Murphy Shewchuk,  Coquihalla Trips and Trails.

For this 4 kilometre hike near Merritt, BC you can choose which way you wish to hike around Kentucky Lake.   You can take the trail from the parking lot which will take you clockwise around the lake.

South East Trail Head

However if you wish to go the other way – counter clockwise – you have to walk into the campground and head over to the boat launch where there is another trail head.

This hiking Trail near Merritt, BC is for the whole family

The hike is generally considered fairly easy as it follows along the lake shore and there are not many hills.  However, the recent windstorms this Spring knocked down a lot of trees that are covering the trail.  We noticed that the Parks crew have been working hard and have removed most of the fallen trees from the trail.  Having said that, there are still one or two that require circumventing.  As long as you have decent foot wear you should be OK.

In some sections of the trail there is a rainforest like feel as the trees are much larger than in other areas of the trail. Take the opportunity to do some sky gazing and look up during your hike and take notice of just how tall some of the tress are.

Horseback riding is great exercise for the horse, and somewhat for yourself. The Merritt adventure offers a number of health and fitness benefits including the development of leg muscles, as well as, improving balance & posture. Most importantly, horseback riding reduces stress and refreshes your inner self. That is my take on the healthy benefits of horseback riding in the Nicola Valley.

Merritt BC Outdoor Activity 5: Mountain Biking

Merritt Mountain Biking Association

Located here in the Nicola Valley, the Merritt Mountain Biking Association is truly a great resource for mountain biking when you have arrived in the community.   Incidentally one of their primary goals is advocating for long term trail access by working with Government and community groups. Consequently, the MMBA was one of the first groups in the province to have an agreement with the crown to manage the trails they ride.  Get a hold of Jordan Pinto for more information. And dare to ride!

In Conclusion

Physical distancing refers to staying away from group gatherings and large public spaces where a virus can be easily spread, and keeping a distance of around two metres. Moreover we all must practice safety and “Wash your Hands”. Even though our country is opening up again, we all need to stay aware while enjoying our outdoor activities we love so much. Play safe. Play often.

FLY FISHING IN MERRITT AT CORBETT LAKE LODGE

Nicola Valley Corbett Lake Lodge Adventures

BC FLY FISHING AT ITS FINEST

Fly Fishing in Merritt at Corbett Lake Lodge is truly a great fishing experience. In the early 1940’s, the Grandby Consolidated Mining Corporation established the lodge as a worker retreat.  At that time the lake was not much more than a pond that was fed by underground springs.  But with the creation of a dam the pond grew to be the great lake it is today.

FLY FISHING IN MERRITT HISTORY

The Merritt BC Canada lodge was purchased by Peter McVey, the dean of fly fishing in the Nicola Valley.  Peter built a solid reputation for fishing at his lodge.  As a result people have come from all over the world to experience this resort.  Peter not only looked after the nuts and bolts of the resort, he was the chef in the restaurant which also added to the notoriety of his establishment. If you ask nicely he would bring out his guitar and have a little song to sing.

NEW OWNERS

In 2013 Peter sold the resort to new owners.  Luckily Peter made sure the buyers were able to maintain the integrity of the resort. Not only did the new owners want to maintain Peter’s legacy, they have taken steps to improve the resort in many areas.

FLY FISHING IN MERRITT AT CORBETT LAKE LODGE IS UNBEATABLE

Corbett Lake Lodge has  a very solid reputation.  Just read what this blogger had to say, (you will have to scroll down the article to find the story). Also in 2016, Canadian Fly Fishing Championships were hosted, in part, at the lodge. The North American and Canadian Championships were scheduled for this year.  Not to mention, the American Loch Style Championships were held at the lodge in 2017, 2018 and 2019.  All these events clearly showing the quality of fishing in the lake.  You can’t beat the fishing at Corbett Lake Lodge near Merritt, BC

THE FACILITIES HAVE RUSTIC CHARM

From the main lodge to the cabins there is much to appreciate. The main lodge has a great sitting area with a beautiful stone fireplace where you can relax, tell your fish stories or read a good book.  There is a dining area for serving meals and for entertaining at events. The resort continues to upgrade the facilities to improve the comfort of their guests.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO AT CORBETT LAKE LODGE NEAR MERRITT, BC

Whereas fishing is the main attraction at this resort near Merritt, BC, there are many activities you can do to have a great time.  Make it a relaxing retreat reading, star gazing and/or lounging around doing nothing? If this sounds like you then grab your lawn chair, book and favourite beverage and head down to the lake shore.

Perhaps painting is your thing? If so just bring your easel and paints and Corbett Lake Lodge will provide the scenery.

Throw your canoe or kayak on your back and explore the shoreline, and photograph the birds and other creatures.  Just remember to respect the fisherman and stay clear of  their areas.

PROXIMITY TO OTHER ADVENTURES

The nice thing about Corbett Lake Lodge is that it is close to several other areas that are worth a visit.  For example, just around the corner is Kane Valley where your options are wide open.  You can try more fishing on several lakes in the area.  Harmon Lake is my favourite. There are 55 KM of snowshoe trails which are excellent for hiking or mountain biking.  The back country logging roads in the area provide safe ATV riding.

The Forestry Ministry has campgrounds at Kane Lake and Harmon Lake.  The Harmon East Campground not only provides camping, it is the trail head  to the Forestry Interpretive Hiking Trail where you can learn more about the local flora and fauna.

If you’re looking for some urban activity, take the fifteen minute trip to the booming metropolis of Merritt, BC. (population 7,200)

Importantly all funds were raised through two charitable initiatives. First with a GoFundMe campaign that surpassed its initial fundraising goal of $15,000 to total $21,100. Secondly with a music compilation initiative which raised $1000 donated to the Nicola Valley Food Bank. Bass Coast Festival has announced all donations to go to the Merritt Rotary Disaster Relief Fund and 6  local Indigenous bands.  to aid relief efforts after the devastating floods of November 2021. Merritt Bass Coast Festival

Let us reminisce about Bass Coast 2019 in the Nicola Valley Merritt BC.  Because of  COVID 19 and the many cancellations of events, I wanted to give some kudos to some of our Merritt festivals. Furthermore, this being its 12th year, the Bass Coast electronic music and arts festival show had no indication of slowing down until the COVID wall went up.

Reflecting back on my 2019 Bass Coast experience, I am reminded that the theme in 2019 was “Duality”.

Past, Future
Journey, Destination
In a world of duality
Where opposite forces exist
In nature, in ourselves
Silence, Sound
In contrast, in balance
What dark is to light

Bass Coast Newbie

It is important to note that this was the first time I experienced Bass Coast in the Nicola Valley. Therefore, having experienced many different festivals throughout Canada, this Merritt festival was a whole new experience of art and music.  Consequently, walking through the front gates, I was transformed into a forest full of wonderment. The abundance of lights, sights, and sounds welcomed me with open arms.

Nicola Valley’s Summer Heat

It gets hot during the summer in the Nicola Valley. In fact, so hot, that many cool off in the ” Coldwater River” during the hottest times of the day when attending the festival. In other words, the temperatures can reach 30 degrees during the day and it is always a good idea to wear a hat and have sunscreen handy.

To illustrate “Bass Coasts” success.

Moreover Bass Coast started in 2009 in Squamish BC. As a result of its success the Merritt festival outgrew the space, therefore moving the event in 2013 to its new home in Merritt, BC.  It is here, in the Nicola Valley, that Bass Coast took off.

Bass Coast has become the quintessential west coast bass music festival. To sum it up, if you know 5 or 50 names on the lineup card you’re guaranteed to discover something new after a weekend of sun and music.

Merritt BC Canada in the Winter

“Go were no man have hardly gone before.” Tania Stewart, eco blogger with Experience Nicola Valley

Merritt in the Winter can become a top destination point for Tourism in Canada.

Make Merritt in the winter your destination. Why not? There are no crowds. Outdoor winter adventures are plentiful like xc skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and snowshoeing.  Why not make the Nicola Valley your “New” winter spot during the snow season.  Merritt is alive and well in November, December, January and even into March in the mountains. Indeed just ask Jason Pake and his wife Trina Hall along with daughter Jasmine Ashley who Experienced the Nicola Valley in November.

The Nicola Valley under some Living Skies

Albeit The Nicola Valley it so Beautiful!

Taking part in winter activities has so many benefits. For example, a good winter activity can help ease the winter blues while boosting your body’s immune and respiratory systems.  And… if you have children, you already know that winter adventures tires them out so they go to bed sooner and sleep better during the night. The result is a quieter, more romantic and peaceful cuddle around a fire with your other half.

To clarify, Merritt is an ideal base camp, for day tripping.

Destination Merritt in Winter

Jason Pake with Trina Hall.

Make Merritt BC your base camp when exploring the region. Merritt sits at the junction of 4 major highways heading north, south, east and west. Ideal for winter day trips. For instance leave early and spend a day hiking in Whistler BC. It is a 4 hour or so drive to Whistler from Merritt BC.  Plus image the time and money saved with restaurants , accommodations and convenience when Merritt is your base camp.

Accommodations in Merritt, like the Best Western Plus , Comfort Inn, and others in the Nicola Valley provide top amenities and services at a fraction of the price.  (Here is a link to a full list of accommodations and contact information)

Additionally taking in Merritt’s Activities.

Bowling in Merritt

Friday Night’s in Merritt BC can be a lot of family fun too at the local Bowling Alley. Bring your “A” game though! As a matter of fact Merritt’s Bowling Alley has provided decades of “Fun” for many generations. There are 8 lanes  5-pin bowling along with the venue being fully licensed.

Nicolanes Bowling is open everyday of the week for a lot of fun with friends, family, or colleagues. For instance, go bowling for staff parties, birthdays, family reunions, or just a night out on the town.  That is come meet new people while being active. Truly “Bowling is fun for ALL ages!”

Sharing nature with your family!

Plan a winter adventure and then the after party. After a winter hike, skiing cross country trails, shredding snow in a snowmobile or sitting back in your ice shack ice fishing why not finish your day around a cozy campfire sharing stories. Or… a bonfire like our photo.

“Winter activities, like snowmobiling, xc skiing and snowshoeing will release some of that pent-up energy, and cause your body to burn fat.”

You should know… one of BC’s top snowmobiling destinations is just up the road from Merritt BC. Snowmobiling around Merritt is truly spectacular. It is

called “The Coke” which is short for Coquihalla Highway. I am going on a limb and say, “Merritt is the “Powder Capital of Snowmobiling in BC”.

Consequently, just south of Merritt are the Kane Valley XC Ski Trails. “Cross Country Skiing” at Kane Valley is a must for all lovers of the winter backcountry. Bring a camera for the picturesque scenery along the trails and, yes, there are warming shelters along some of the xc ski routes as well.

Even more impressive, is our four-pronged approach to winter adventures here in the Nicola Valley. Rounding out at #3 is the  “Ice Fishing” opportunities in the region. We enjoy over 200 lakes in the area. Many are ice fishing lakes. And #4 is snowshoeing. Pick a backcountry road or head to Kane Valley.

“Before heading out for a winter activity, be sure to dress accordingly — ideally, in layers, and let someone know where you are going and always carry emergency back up supplies, ” says me, Tania Stewart.

Just So You Get It.
Merritt BC is centrally located.

Accommodations are affordable in the Nicola Valley compared to many of the surrounding bigger cities and communities.  Merritt has “Base Camp” written all over it.  Enjoying sightseeing day trips without the hassle or added expense of moving from one accommodation to another is a big plus when exploring from Merritt. Spending a lot of your time unpacking and packing up, over and over again, can be a big time waster on any vacation.

Day Trip Destinations

Nearby Kamloops is 87 km with one hour travel time from Merritt. Here is the plus. There are 2 main roads leading to Kamloops from Merritt. The quick and fast Kamloops connector (Highway 5). It is an up-and-over highway through the mountains. The other route (Highway 5A), is a little bit longer, many say more scenic, cuts and snakes its way around the mountains passing by lakes, ranches and grasslands. It makes for a perfect day trip with two routes of scenery.

Kelowna Day Trip

Sun Peaks Resort.

Kelowna, best accessed from Highway 97C,  is just over the mountains to the south of Merritt BC. The distance to Kelowna is 127 km and about only 1 hr 36 minutes away. In Kelowna there are 2 ski resorts to enjoy as a winter day trip – Big White Ski Resort and the other is Silver Star.

Feel the Need to Ski?

Sun Peaks Resort and Harper Mountain.

Beyond is Hope BC.

Othello Tunnels

While the drive is spectacular. Its only 120 km – 1 hour drive from Merritt to Hope BC. Incidentally Hope has many attractions. Many with no crowds and most are very outdoorsy. Take the Othello Tunnels. It is a series of tunnels through mountains over a gorge providing scenery and some history. You know what tunnels mean right? They can be enjoyed in sun, rain and snow and you stay dry.

Winter in Merritt BC

Notably the Nicola Valley is becoming a better recognized winter destination for the region. The secret is out.  November, December, January or February are home to many outdoor winter attractions as well as many indoor ones.

|Some of the indoor venues to visit during the winter months include Merritt’s Aquatic Center with a pool, 2 x hot tubs, a sauna and a fully equipped fitness room. For all avid shoppers, Merritt boast’s a downtown hub full of shop’s, cafe’s, historical pubs, gift stores, services, and nail salons.

Time your visit right, and you can come a enjoy a local hockey game with a Junior Hockey Team – the Merritt Centennials . So… the question is, “What are you going to do in Merritt in the winter months?” The answer better not be a “Couch Potato”.
