On any given day there is likely to be wedding anniversaries in Merritt BC. But there is one that is especially dear to my heart and that is mine and Shirley’s. This summer, in Merritt British Columbia, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary, which in this day and age, has become rare. However, it is not so among our friends.
Where My Wedding Anniversary Began
At the end of 1969 and the beginning of 1970 most of my friends were celebrating their 21st birthdays. One of those birthdays was being celebrated on January 3rd, 1970. So that meant we had a party on New Year’s Eve and on January 3rd. It was decided we should go to Oil Can Harry’s Night Club in downtown Vancouver, BC, Canada on January 2nd. As I was not seeing anyone at the time I did not have a date but my friends came to the rescue and arranged a blind date for me. That blind date was Shirley and the rest is history.
The Wedding

Our wedding was a very lavish affair because Shirley’s Dad wanted to have a massive celebration. We, on the other hand, would have preferred a more intimate affair. So we gave him a list of “must haves” and then told him if he wanted to invite others he could do so but he had to prepare and send the invitations. As a result we had a very large group helping us celebrate.
The Journey to Celebrating Wedding Anniversaries
The most often question asked us is how did we do it? Well from my perspective the major secret is finding the right person as your partner and I have to say I hit the Jackpot. I don’t think I could have found someone who was more suitable. She is kind, loving and patient. She is also flexible as our initial plan did not work out. I was going to teach and in the summers we were going back to Oregon State University so she could complete her degree.
We had to regroup and develop a new plan.
The Next Steps
We started out in a basement suite in East Vancouver, living below an Italian family. They were so kind to us. However, prices were starting to rise so we felt it was necessary to get into the housing market. As a result we purchased a townhouse near Steveston in Richmond BC.

Our Careers
I then started my 33 year career in Municipal Government as an accounting clerk. The fog in Richmond was a major hazard to my commute to Coquitlam so we bought a house out that way. Our Children were born in this house.
After Coquitlam I spent 7 years in the City of Port Moody as Deputy Treasurer. Shirley was working in the insurance field. However it became time to advance my career so I took a job in Williams Lake, which turned out to be a great place for families. We spent the next sixteen years doing what families do, bringing kids to soccer, hockey, baseball, art, music and Job’s Daughters. Needless to say those years flew by.
Shirley had lucked into a great job at the orthodontist’s office. She had a great employer who let her sneak out to attend school events. We were able to get away on weekends because the office was closed on Fridays at noon.
Times Are A Changing
Unfortunately, the City was so eager to have Wal-Mart come to town that they were prepared to meet the large retailer’s wishes despite protests from the community. Council’s decision impacted us and I could no longer feel comfortable working for this group. Hence our move to Merritt.

Merritt BC Here We Come
The year was 2003 and by this time we were empty nesters. We had bought a “fixer upper” in a great neighbourhood by the forest and overlooking the Nicola Valley. It turned out to be a smart move as we quickly made friends and got involved in the community through our volunteering.
We have been here almost twenty years. So if you want to know why we love it, head over to the stories on Experience Nicola Valley and travel information on Experience Merritt to see all the things that make this place so special.
Wedding Anniversaries Our Special One
When our kids asked us what kind of party we wanted for our fiftieth anniversary I said I would like just a small gathering and Shirley agreed. Our celebration was a destination party in the North Shuswap.

We were fortunate to be able to rent a luxurious cabin just across from the lake which provided great water fun for all our guests.

However, it is important to note that the big part of any wedding anniversary celebration is the food. Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of the feast but I assure you it was delicious. In any case, I do have a picture of the cup cakes my daughter made. The icing represents the colours of our wedding.

While our group was small, they came from Calgary, Spokane, Redmond, Ladner, Langley, Richmond and Vancouver.

The last celebration of the day was the lighting of sparklers around the fire pit.

In conclusion, we leave our story of our wedding anniversary with a photo of us fifty years after the photo at the top of this article.

Racing in Merritt BC – Have I got the hot ticket for you! I’m excited to share my first-ever visit to the Merritt Speedway. For someone who is relatively new to town, I was hooked from the moment the engines roared. Follow the No. 8 road through the Nicola Valley to Marmott Rd just 5 minutes outside the city.
Eager fans await the races. (Tia Delaney)
Fun for Everyone Racing in Merritt BC
“They run stock cars on rebuilt engines,” dad says as we pull out of the driveway. I am excited as the big Race Day is finally here at the Merritt Speedway! I’ve wrangled him and my uncle to come with me as all of us are first-timers to the track. Yes, here is to growing tourism in Merritt BC!
Race Day in the Nicola Valley
I loved everything about this day, from the delicious smell of the concession to the children jumping up as the races began. However, watching the crowd, I spied lucky fans scoring the top-row seats. Everyone cheered loudly as their favorites pulled across the finish line.

Attractions in Merritt
Although moving here a year ago, I haven’t yet experienced the must-see attractions that my new community has to offer. For example, racing, fishing, camping, hiking, sledding, and exploring the many lakes and hills surrounding us. It’s an absolutely beautiful community, and I’m excited to check it all out!
Clear blue sky and racetrack. (Tia Delaney)
Nostalgia at First Glance
We pull up and make our way to a thin white building that conveniently says “Ticket Booth” along the side. It is set next to a long row of old wooden blue bleachers. The nostalgia is present as the fresh outdoor air and scenic view bring back memories of country fairs and rodeos of my youth. Above all a great way to spend a day!
Cash-Friendly Car Racing in Merritt BC
We walk up to the ticket counter, meanwhile, the announcer’s voice booms as he shares commentary on the racers, “Fire up your engines, we’re ready for some racing in Merritt BC!” The cashier waves us over, “We take cash only,” she says helpfully. I file that away under Useful Information, as I don’t want to miss out on tickets, memorabilia, and concession snacks. You really will want to put Nicola Valley racing on your activities list.
Eyes ahead, the races are on! (Tia Delaney)
A Seniors Discount
“Are you a senior?” she asks my uncle, “It depends,” he answers with a grin. “Are you over 55?” she says with a chuckle. Dad’s laugh is the answer as he rags on his younger brother, “Guess who’s a senior now!” It’s always a good time with these two, never a dull moment!
Kid Friendly Place
The cashier takes our cash, “That will be $10 each per senior and $15 for one adult.” However, note that kids 10 and under are free, definitely playing the “cool auntie” card next time the little ones are in town. For those of you looking for fun things to do in the city, it truly is a fun and affordable way to spend an afternoon.
No dust in sight with this tanker. (Tia Delaney)
Retro Water Tanker when Racing in Merritt BC
Stamped and on our way, I move closer to get a good look at the giant white tanker truck with an exposed engine to laps around the track. Firstly, I notice the sheer size of the tires. Secondly, the rate it travels is at a rocking speed. The track is thoroughly doused with water before the announcer calls the cars to the track to begin grooming it for Merritt Speedway racing.
Hear the Car Engines Roar
You can hear the roar of the engines. As a result, the whole place is beginning to sound like a Ferrari convention. It certainly is a great sound, the rumble sits low in your chest. Subsequently, you can picture yourself strapping into your car and getting ready for your first race!
A Birdseye View
I hunker down on the far bleachers with a side view of the racers coming out of the pit and navigating their first corner. Likewise, the smoke starts radiating from cars still being worked on. We still have 15 minutes until the first race begins. But most importantly, the drivers are ensuring their race cars are safe for a day at the track.
Announcing the Starting Line
The announcer’s voice booms across the field ushering in the starting Line-Up and greeting the fans. Meanwhile, I scan the crowd for those who have arrived early to take in BC’s Fastest Dirt Track. The Merritt Speedway. Moreover, it is not to be missed!
The Final Lap when Racing in Merritt BC
In conclusion, the dust settles as the final racing invitational completes its last rounds. Likewise, we raise a salute to the fans, sponsors, and drivers, as the trophies are handed out and the victory lap is taken. A successful season all in all, and happy fans look forward to the new year in anticipation.
Racing into Fall
Subsequently, with the end of the Racing Season, it’s time to get geared up for Fall. For instance, Pumpkin carving, Apple bobbing, Costume hunting, Cider sipping, and Eggnog delighting are just a few of the treats we have in store for you. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll feel you’ve fallen in love with Merritt just a little bit more!

BC Flood and Fire Relief – It has been awhile since the disastrous floods and fires in Southern BC. At this point in time it seems that the plight of the people affected by these events have been forgotten. However there still is a significant need. Provincial disaster relief is slow in coming and in all likelihood will not be sufficient to cover all the costs incurred. As well, many people who thought they were insured weren’t.
BC Fire and Floods a Reminder
They say a picture is worth a thousand words so I want to remind everyone what happened in Merritt, Lytton, Princeton, and Abbotsford.

Recovery from these events is a long ways away but the people need your help now.
Hell or Highwater Concert Help-a-thon
The Hell or High Water concert/help-a-thon is a massive undertaking. The organizing group has put together an amazing group of artists to entertain you and to encourage you to help out. For the 12 hour period, starting on March 13, 2022 at 10:00AM there will be appearances of over 50 Artists and another 25 or so dignitaries. To see where you can tune in to watch the Hell or High Water Fundraiser please go to the website. You can follow along and donate on participating websites, social media and, maybe even, TV.
The great thing about this concert is that the overhead has been kept as low as possible so your donation goes to the fire and flood relief victims. The organizers are donating their time and expertise, the artists are donating their performances and all prizes have been donated.
You may want to know who is behind the fund raiser for fire and flood relief. The “Brothers of Tourism” at EH Canada Travel, Kenny Hess (Founder of Rockin’ River Music Festival), the Citxw Nlaka’pamux Assembly, Tourism Nicola Valley, Experience Nicola Valley and the Rotary Club of Merritt are all proud to step up and present the “Hell or High Water Fundraiser”.
Hell or Highwater Entertainers
Obviously with over 50 performers I won’t be covering them all but you can be sure that everyone is a top caliber performer and you will enjoy every minute of it.
The lineup includes musicians from all genres with a large tribute to Country and Western. This is not surprising because this fire and flood relief concert originated from the Country Music Capital of Canada, Merritt BC. For the full list of Artists you can go to www.hellorhighwater.ca .
Just to get you excited here is but a few people performing for you, George Canyon, Patricia Conroy, Big and Rich, Kenny Hess, Karen Lee Batten, David Gogo, Jackson Hollow, Lisa Brokop, Duane Steele and Beverley Mahood. If old time rock and roll is more your thing then you can stay tuned for Chilliwack or Loverboy.
Fire and Flood Relief Prizes
To encourage you to donate to the fire and flood relief concert, Hell or High Water, you can win a valuable prize. When you donate you can pick the prize that you want to win. You will automatically get 3 chances at the draw and then you get to earn other chances at your draw. So it is actually better to donate early so your chances of winning become a little bit better.
What can you win? There are prizes for every taste from Canucks tickets, Rockin River Tickets or a stay at a beautiful cabin on Glimpse Lake near Merritt, BC.
I am an art fan and have to say there is an amazing painting by Canadian Artist, David Langevin that has a retail value of over $8,000. So this will not only be a great addition to your home but also be a great investment in one of Canada’s foremost artists.

Hiking, biking, horseback riding, mountain biking trails in Merritt
Parks in Merritt BC Canada – One of the most important things we look for when relocating to a different community in Canada besides a house, retail, safety, are family parks. Merritt B.C. has much to offer when it comes to out-door enthusiasts. Moreover if you are thinking of moving to Merritt B.C. rest assured our community holds a certain standard to providing a wide variety of parks for all ages. Furthermore one can walk a short distance to most parks. Truly there is a lot to experience in the Nicola Valley when considering play time in the outdoors in Merritt B.C. Canada.

Rotary Bike Park – Parks in Merritt BC Canada
The Rotary Bike Park is one of the most visited parks in Merritt B.C. Canada for mountain biking. The community park has a bike park, skate board park, playground park, also includes a walking trail. Rotary Bike Park was originally built in 2006 while receiving upgrades in 2018. Therefore with the introduction of this bike park, the sport of mountain biking in Merritt BC got a boost.

Merritt Skate Board Park
Adjacent to the bike park is a well maintained skate board park. It is for all ages, being safe, and has a community friendliness about the park. Personally I have brought my son there since he was 7yrs old. What made me love our community even more were the older kids who were always on hand to teach new tricks or help dust my son off when he bit it. Social interaction is so important for children’s development and self-confidence.

Children’s Playground Park
Within this area is a playground park. It was built as part of a community and not affiliated with a school at all. The equipment is soft padded to help prevent injuries. There is a slide, swing, merry go round and more. See… lots of activity and playground parks in Merritt BC Canada. And we are just getting started.

Valley Kitchen
Hungry? We have that covered too. Located beside the Rotary Bike Park you can feed your hunger with a great burger at Valley Kitchen. With a kid’s menu as well as drinks, ice-cream, coffee, and one of the best burgers I have ever had. One of my blogger cohorts had an opportunity to sit down and have a chat with these young entrepreneurs. Below is the short interview.

Parks in Merritt BC Canada Have Health Benefits
Albeit exercise is key for our children! Therefore, it is safe to say, being exposed to sunlight and fresh air provides a healthy dose of the “sunshine vitamin D” when playing in our parks in Merritt BC Canada. Who would’ve of thought that swings can help provide children with physical development. Some of the skills research shows swings have include grasping, balance, landing, pushing, while getting into a rhythm of the swing. Moreover the memories that are gained at the playground are priceless as there is no limit to a child’s imagination. Moreover this is one of the few places a child has control of play with little adult interference.

Merritt Bench Elementary School
Located at Bench Elementary School are 2 playgrounds. One for younger aged children interested in playing hop-scotch, , and a second one for intermediate aged ones interested in playing basketball hoops within a forest setting. Although I do believe there is no age requirement to take part in the adventure and fun enjoyed on playgrounds.

Child Development Is Supported by Parks and Playgrounds
Moreover playgrounds and parks can help stimulate our child’s cognitive development while helping with problem solving skills. Going across the monkey bars truly takes thought, with space, distance with a lot of bravery. Making it across that first time gave me the confidence to tackle everything at the playground.

Smith Pioneer Park Lower Nicola
Parks in Merritt BC Canada includes Smith Pioneer Park, which is really a Thompson-Nicola Regional District community park, located in the heart of Lower Nicola. Let me assure you that this is an amazing recreational park for all. Firstly, the equipment will surely keep them interested and invigorated for hours. Secondly, adjacent to the park is a arena for horse lovers who may want to train in a safe arena.

Playground Amenities
Many of our parks in Merritt B.C. offer a person a chance to cool down or have a family picnic while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Moreover, many recreation areas are suited for parents who would like sit in the shade, relax while your children play. All is good when one knows their children are having fun, exercising while being where they should be “outside.” Truly because of the many benefits children gain playing outside only makes the need for playgrounds that more important when looking to relocate. The “Annual Garlic Festival” is hosted in Smith Pioneer Park in late September.

Rotary Water Park
So when all is said and done. A great way to cool down in those hot summer days is Merritt’s only water spray park, Rotary Park. Located within walking distance from downtown is our only water park. Truly a place for children to cool down while parents can rest assure that this is a safe child zone. Furthermore, this park has been visited by the Easter Bunny, with an annual egg hunt, host to “Aboriginal Day”, “Canada Day Festivities” as well as “Music in the Park”. Along with having an amazing bandshell for live entertainment this park gives a unique venue for a family park.
With a children’s playground there is a small rose garden dedicated to Princess Diana.
Rotary Park Playground
Adjacent to the water park is a playground full of adventure for every age. Proving slides, swings, jungle time apparatus and more. Safely built with a child’s imagination in mind. Providing tons of fun with a short hop to the water park to cool off.

Parks in Merritt BC
Also beside the Rotary Park flows the Nicola River. With safety and adult supervision a world of nature can be explored. Spotting some ducks, tadpoles, occasional frogs, chipmunk or a beaver swimming by is not unusual. More than often my son and I have come across a sleeping deer. What could be better than this, nature at your fingertips.

In Conclusion
Knowing that one of the most important things we look for when relocating to a new community are family parks and child playgrounds. The Nicola Valley offers everything from a water park to skate boarders, bike park, and countless playgrounds. Ideal for all out-door enthusiasts. With a wide range of different parks that provide unique experiences in the community of Merritt enables families to enjoy the outdoors.

I remember hearing about Movember in Merritt BC. Some called it “No Shave November”. However, back in high school I thought it was an awful idea. No, I don’t mean the millions upon millions of dollars in charity raised each year for vital causes like mental health and cancer treatment! I just meant that I was a scraggly teenager. I had inadvertently participated in every previous Movember without much to show for it. But times have changed.
Wiser Movember in Merritt
I’m a twenty something year old man now. I have my own place and I drive around in a responsible midsize sedan. Perhaps most surprisingly, after a recent camping trip when I forgot my shaving kit, I looked in the rearview mirror as I got on the highway back home and decided I had begun my clumsy foray into the world of ‘stache ownership. Therefore, I had to decide? Was I in or out on this ‘stache movement?
My Movember in Merritt
While I can’t say that my newfound crumb catcher is a result of a Movember pledge – this was more of a mid-September thing. The convenient thing about being early is that I can pass some potentially life-saving advice. Advice passed down to any readers who might be considering, or already well on their way through a no-shave challenge. Without further ado, here’s the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of participating in Movember’s most popular campaign, a month without shaving.
I got this nice picture while out camping. Let us know if you’d like to hear more about this spot!
The Good: New (and Bizarre) Compliments
I was lucky enough to get by the most awkward stages of stache development. Hiding in the woods for nearly a week will do the job. If you’re not able to isolate from society for 3-6 days and let the “did your shaver break or are you keeping that?” days roll by that way, just try to tough it out! You’re doing this for charity and to look more like Chris Hemsworth; both very honourable causes.
No-One Recognizes You After No-Shave
Anyway, regardless of how long it takes you to grow your ideal facial hair. Do not worry, and especially during these bizarre COVID times, friends and acquaintances will be seeing the new look for the first time anyway. We tend to recognize people by their faces, so significantly changing up that familiar face has a way of getting people to really tune in; what I’m trying to say is that you were always a handsome son of a gun – they’re just noticing it more!
I had gone a few days without shaving by this picture. Luckily I got to spend those days outdoors!
The Bad: Patches, Invisible Hairs, and More
I was fortunate enough to have spent the formative days of my goatee journey toasting up marshmallows and reading by the campfire. However, once I got back to work, I realized just how out of sorts the whole thing was panning out. While I was gunning for a tidy, definition building goatee, I was a bit more Inigo Montoya and a bit less Walter White. There’s a few things going on here. Therefore it is important to note any burgeoning beard is going to come with a handful of patchy and uneven spots. And yes, these do eventually fill in! Perhaps more interesting however, is the breadth of colour that the average mustache is likely to represent.
Reality
In real life, you’re liable to see your regular hair colour, about three or four shades on either side of it, gray(!), black and “invisible hairs”. This mix-match of colour is easily remedied in the movies with a little beard dye. If the colour does not suit the cause then you can deal with it, either by taking matters into your own hands or consulting a pro. Local beauty salon TC Hair & Medspa offers an intriguing one hour long beard colouring service that’s likely to assuage even the most picky among us. Check them out and tell us how it goes!
The Ugly: Remember Those Marshmallows I Mentioned?
As you might have surmised by the title of this section, you’re going to be sharing your food from now on out. In other words the good news is you’ve got a tea strainer with you wherever you go! The bad news is, it’s also a soup strainer, crumb catcher, marshmallow shredder, and a few other things I won’t get into. However, you can style your stache and rein it in to prevent some of this. Although long term you’re going to need to learn to keep on top of this new problem. I’m serious about this one. There’s an entire YouTube channel online dedicated to keeping food out of the face furniture. In addition, you’re going to eat a little bit of mustache hair. Sorry. At least you know all those famous bearded celebrities are, too!
In Conclusion
There we have it – everything you probably never wanted to know about Movember participation. Jokes aside, participating in a fundraiser challenge or even just a show of solidarity like this is a very commendable endeavor. This cause has been supported in many different and interesting ways by the Movember Foundation since it’s inception and we’re lucky to have a challenge on our hands that is arguably even more do-able in the current COVID situation. Consequently, and unfortunately, other raffles, runs, and competitions have had to take the year off

Merritt Bass Coast Festival
Let us reminisce about Bass Coast 2019 in the Nicola Valley Merritt BC. Because of COVID 19 and the many cancellations of events, I wanted to give some kudos to some of our Merritt festivals. Furthermore, this being its 12th year, the Bass Coast electronic music and arts festival show had no indication of slowing down until the COVID wall went up.

Reflecting back on my 2019 Bass Coast experience, I am reminded that the theme in 2019 was “Duality”.
Past, Future
Journey, Destination
In a world of duality
Where opposite forces exist
In nature, in ourselves
Silence, Sound
In contrast, in balance
What dark is to light
Bass Coast Newbie
It is important to note that this was the first time I experienced Bass Coast in the Nicola Valley. Therefore, having experienced many different festivals throughout Canada, this Merritt festival was a whole new experience of art and music. Consequently, walking through the front gates, I was transformed into a forest full of wonderment. The abundance of lights, sights, and sounds welcomed me with open arms.
Nicola Valley’s Summer Heat
It gets hot during the summer in the Nicola Valley. In fact, so hot, that many cool off in the ” Coldwater River” during the hottest times of the day when attending the festival. In other words, the temperatures can reach 30 degrees during the day and it is always a good idea to wear a hat and have sunscreen handy.

To illustrate “Bass Coasts” success.
Moreover Bass Coast started in 2009 in Squamish BC. As a result of its success the Merritt festival outgrew the space, therefore moving the event in 2013 to its new home in Merritt, BC. It is here, in the Nicola Valley, that Bass Coast took off.
Bass Coast has become the quintessential west coast bass music festival. To sum it up, if you know 5 or 50 names on the lineup card you’re guaranteed to discover something new after a weekend of sun and music.

Merritt Canada Stories Celebrated At The Blogger Awards 2020!
The Nicola Valley comes together to hear about the successes of ExperienceNicolaValley.com!
Note! This event happened on Mar 6/2020, just a week before social distancing settled on our valley, province, country, world. Glad we celebrated these Merritt Canada stories just in time… Stay safe!
Merritt Canada stories and experiences are everywhere around us. Our job is to find them and then celebrate them. The 2020 Bloggers Awards were held in early March, and people from the Merritt community and elsewhere gathered at the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame for good food, music, info, acknowledgments, and laughs. The tables were full and conversations were lively!
The Experience Nicola Valley 2020 Blogging Awards Gala
Celebrating Experience Nicola Valley story tellers
Just a month earlier, creators and consultants of the community blogging website Experience Nicola Valley, brothers Greg and Colin Girard, and Melvina White, thought it was time to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the contributing bloggers. How? Golden trophies at an event like the Academy Awards, of course! Add a local twist of prime rib beef (ranch country!) and music by longtime popular locals, Tammy Weymouth and Stuart Emslie. And, oh yes, a talk by a travel influencer, a popular Canadian Vlogger. All in all, it was fun, unique, exciting and something the Nicola Valley has not seen around these parts for a long time. A total success.

Nicola Valley Bloggers Telling Merritt Canada Stories
Bloggers for the Experience Nicola Valley website have been promoting the town of Merritt and the Nicola Valley for almost three years.
The group of bloggers have been writing about businesses, services, individuals, and non-profits in the community. The blogs are full of info, insights, photos, and things to do in our area, with a focus on adventures of all kinds in the community and valley.
The bloggers meet up almost every month to plan their next steps, talk about upcoming events, and the choices for upcoming blogs. The blogging is done out of a passion for our community, and the hope to show off the town of Merritt and the beautiful Nicola Valley to those far and wide, to bring a benefit to all of us who live here.
Check out all the blogs on our site! Lots! Such a variety! But I digress…
Community and Blogger Nominations
Not only were the bloggers up for acknowledgments, but also the people in the community who had been the focus of the blogs. So businesses, events, Non-Profits, organizations and individuals were nominated for the interest they had generated online.
Blog award winners and nominees – (photo credit) Julie Pollard
The awards choices were made by tracking the online data! The statistics of the views, Likes, Shares on the website and Social Media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) determined the picks for the nominations. After intense review, the coordinators of the Experience Nicola Valley group sent out nominations for different categories, like best photo, most popular blog, and best event blog.
A great idea to share the successes of the community blogging endeavor with the community it serves! An Awards Gala! A Merritt Canada Bloggers Awards Gala!
Put the Bloggers to Work!
The bloggers pitched in to plan, create, decorate, and man the stations at the Gala. There was a wet bar, filled with beverages of all kinds, tables set up with candles for the ticket holders and the nominees, and two tables ready for a delicious catered dinner.
The stage at the Country Music Hall of Fame was filled with a big TV for the presentations, mics for the speakers and performers, framed acknowledgements for the nominees and golden trophies for the winners.
Julie Pollard and Tania Stewart took photos all evening of all the fun and action. So did I!

Greg Interviews the Nominees
Greg Girard is very excited about the worldwide response to the Experience Nicola Valley blogs! And he works hard to be sure our blogs get out there! At each of our meetings, he shares with us the data that is pouring in- the number of blogs read, page views, website visits. He tracks for us the social media attention our posts are getting, all the shares of the Merritt and Nicola Valley outdoor adventures, events, restaurants, gift shops, art and culture. Greg researches the status of our blogs on the Google searches, noting which are doing well, and which need tweaking. He is as determined as we are to bring lots of attention to the exciting and worthwhile things going on in our valley.
And while his brother Colin makes the website magic happen behind the scenes, Greg is ready in the bright lights of the cameras. But his purpose? Show off this great community and the people who make it that way. He interviewed all the nominees as the evening began. (Look for the full list of interviews on the Experience Nicola Valley You Tube and Facebook Pages.

The spacious setting at the Hall of Fame was full and noisy, with lots of laughter, and a few introductions exchanged. People mingled and chatted, sharing stories of the blogs. And took photos before settling in to a hearty plate of medium rare prime rib beef with roasted veg. And celebratory cake….

Community Involvement from Open Mic
Open Mic, a successful Nicola Valley Arts Council program, running for two and a half years at the Kekuli Cafe, received an event nomination for a blog written about it. This long running live music weekly event is worth a blog, or two, or three! We have a solid crew running it, regular local musicians playing at it, as well as lots of variety with locals who come now and then and visitors passing through and playing a set or two. And even more regulars in our audience!
For this event, Open Mic closed up at Kekuli and we filled a double table at the Gala with crew, musicians, and Open Mic fans. My daughter Tasya traveled from Vancouver to celebrate with us. And as she usually does, got busy helping along with the bloggers.

Usually the Sound Guy for Open Mic, Amrit Ahuja got out his video equipment to cover this event. Amrit shares his time between sound recording, music creating, and videography. He spent the evening behind the video cam and we look forward to a short promo with lots of highlights of the Gala. Of course we saved him some cake!
The Experience Nicola Valley event coordinators put on a great awards presentation, acknowledging the nominees and crediting the award winners. Greg split his presentation between info on the nominees, and jokes to engage the crowd.

Guest Speaker on Social Media
Matt and Karla, popular You Tube vloggers from Calgary, Alberta joined us for the evening. Matt was the special guest speaker. He talked to us about the importance of social media supported by a beautiful slide presentation from their travels across Canada. The info he provided was familiar to those of us blogging with Greg, as Greg has inspired us with the possibilities of a great online presence and how to do it. Matt’s talk gave us his own story through the online process to their personal success, focusing especially on You Tube. His statistics were impressive, and I’m sure convinced many in the room why it’s worth getting our local stories online and out to the global community.

Many thanks to Matt and Karla for their perspective, and for coming all this way to celebrate our successes with us and sharing theirs!

Arts in the Community
While the stage set up was changed for our live music performance, I took the opportunity for a five minute talk about the Nicola Valley Arts Council. I blog about art and culture in the community, while serving as the Arts Gallery Director for the Arts Council.
How much info can I squeeze into 5 minutes. Lots, if I talk fast. So I did! And gave away several free memberships in the Arts Council!

And Live Music from Stuart and Tammy
We loved this part of the evening. It was a great wind down. Lots of visiting, chatting, and a little dancing to some covers, and some beautiful original music from Tammy Weymouth and Stuart Emslie.

Story Telling Songs Fitting For The End of the Gala
The whole room quieted when Stuart sang some of the emotional songs he has written. Stuart is involved with a group focused on mental health in youth, and how to mitigate and express their difficult experiences. Stuart’s personal experiences have inspired him to get involved and contribute his musical talents.
So, for a few moments during a joyful night, we were reminded of what community is about. Contribution and serving. And getting together…
“Have some fun, do some good.”, as my recently passed partner Gord Cockle always said.
A Lot of Fun, and Doing Good in the Community
As the evening drew to a close, the people voiced their appreciation for our blogging endeavor. We were glad to stop briefly, work hard, and pull off a fun Gala, a dress up evening in our small town. To take time to celebrate each other. And celebrate with others.
Fun at the Blogger Gala event!
Thanks to Greg, Colin, Melvina, all the bloggers, and everyone who came to our Gala evening. Glad we did it!
Still so much to blog about! We feel like we have just scratched the surface with over a hundred blogs in our almost 2.5 years! It’s a small town in a big valley. Lots of history to write about. Lots of people, businesses, organizations, non-profits. Great adventures, restaurants, services….
Our Experience Nicola Valley group has lots to inspire us. As a group, we inspire each other to keep going and promote our town, our valley. And tell some great stories.
And for now… #staysafe #stayhealthy #flattenthecurve
This is a whole new reality to write about. Blessings…
