Canada Country Music Star

George Canyon and Canada Country Music go hand and hand. George knows full well what I mean, as he rose to become one of Canada’s biggest country music stars in the early 2000’s! Still playing to live audiences, George has won countless accolades and awards over his career, including Juno Awards, CCMA Awards, and ECMA Awards and many more.

Canada Country Music

George has recorded 12 albums. His debut album, ‘One Good Friend’, was certified Platinum. With a career of  country hits like “Just Like You”, “I Believe in Angels”, “Drinkin’ Thinkin’”, “Daughters of the Sun”, “I Got This”, “I Want You To Live”, and “Slow Dance” it is no wonder George is a well known Canadian country music artist.

“If I won, I’d probably go unconscious, … Which would be bad, because then there would be no acceptance speech.” George Canyon

Life With George

Frederick George Lays, best known by his stage name George Canyon, was born on August 22, 1970, in Pictou Country, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was actually raised in Fox Book, Nova Scotia and then in Hopewell, Nova Scotia. Before the stage lights, awards, and movie gigs, music has always been an aspiration for George. But his love for his family, wife Jennifer and children Kale and Madison, always come first. The dream of country music had to wait. Supporting his family with a guaranteed paycheck was more important so he worked as a bylaw officer to support them.

“You’re a pleasure as a lover, you’re a treasure as a wife” George Canyon

A Star Was Born

In 2004, with Jennifer’s support, George set out to compete on U.S.A. Network’s “Nashville Star”. It is an American Idol-type show with a country twist. As a matter of fact, those who know George are well aware of the talent and passion he embodies. Therefore they were not surprised that he was a hit on the show. George did not win. He came very close to winning the show but, more importantly, he had won the hearts of country music fans throughout the world.

True North Strong and Free

George Canyon is also a highly regarded humanitarian. For example, it is no secret George Canyon supports the hard working men and women of the Canadian military. Therefore, in honor of his support George was appointed Honorary Colonel for 14 Wing Greenwood Air Force Base in Nova Scotia in 2008.

Furthermore, he was also made the first ever Colonel Commandant of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets by The Honourable Peter MacKay in 2011. Moreover, he was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in honour of his ongoing work with the Air Cadets and other charities. Lastly, he was recognized by the Canadian Country Music Association with the Humanitarian Award in recognition for his work with the Canadian military.

George Cares

Among his many identities, Canyon is also a proud Canadian. Like many in Canada George is a huge hockey fan. He roots for his team, the Calgary Flames by singing the national anthem during their home games. Good guy George is also a spokesperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). A charity close to his heart starting from when he himself was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes at age of 14.

The Sky Is The Limit

George was an air cadet with ambitions on serving his country. He was told at an early age that his diabetes would make being a pilot in the Air Force impossible. However, in 2009, things changed after learning more about what it means to live with Type-1 Diabetes. George made the decision to make some adjustments to his diet and lifestyle. Consequently with the advancements in insulin pump technology, George beat the odds by passing all the medical tests and got his pilot’s license.

Martina McBride was born on July 29, 1966 in Sharon, Kansas. Her parents owned a dairy farm. Martina would spend hours after school singing to different artists like Reba McEntire, Juice Newton, Connie Smith, Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt.

“Not only do I know how to milk a cow, but I know how to herd a bunch of cows, too, which is a life skill that I think may come in handy someday.” Martina McBride

At the age of eight her father fronted a band called “The Schiffters” which Martina sang for. As she grew older she also started playing keyboard for the band. She also played for a rock band called “The Penetrators”. In 1987 she created a group called “Lotus” and started looking for space to rehearse.

Martina met and married John McBride after renting his space for her band. They moved to Nashville where her husband started working for Garth Brooks. After some time, Garth told Martina if she could get a record deal she could be his opening act.

The Story of Tim McGraw Before The Merritt BC Canada Murals

Country music artist Tim McGraw wasn’t always interested in music. As a matter of fact he originally thought that he would be a professional baseball payer. Unfortunately, during his college years he injured his knee and could no longer pursue that career. Which is a good thing for us Country Music Fans.

Baseball To Country Music

He learnt to play guitar during his college years, after and during baseball. Although, at times, his roommates often hid his guitar claiming that he was hard on the ears. Subsequently his determination never wavered. He would still play and perform for money.

In 1989 Tim’s hero Keith Whitley died. As a result, when he heard the news, Tim dropped out of college and moved to Nashville to pursue a career in country music.

Accomplishments of  Tim McGraw

There is no shortage of amazing songs written and performed by Country Music Artist Tim McGraw. In short some of my favorite country songs are “Don’t Take the Girl”, “I Like it, I Love it”, “It’s your Love”, “Just to See You Smile” and “Red Rag Top”.

Tim has accomplished so much since his first demo single was released in 1991.  At that time, the single “What Room Was the Holiday In” didn’t perform well on the charts. In fact, his first self titled album “Tim McGraw” released in 1991 did not resonate well with the country music fans. But persistence always wins.

Merritt BC Canada Murals Honor Country Music Hits

McGraw’s second album entitled “Not a Moment Too Soon” released in 1994 was much more successful. His single “Indian Outlaw” not only raced to the top of the charts, it also created a lot of backlash from people who found it offensive to Native Americans. This only helped the sales of the single. Since then Tim has racked up many different awards over the years.

Family Life

McGraw was born in Delhi , Louisiana, USA on May 1 1967. He grew up thinking his father was Horace Smith. In the light of finding his birth certificate Tim learned his Father was really Tug McGraw. In short, he was only 11 years old when finding this out. He eventually got to meet his real father but it wasn’t until he was 18 that they started to form a closer relationship.

Family Is Important

In 1996 Tim McGraw and Faith Hill married and had 3 beautiful girls. As a result Tim’s desire to be a good father and to have a regular family became priority number one. Consequently, Tim coaches his girl’s baseball and basketball teams.  Ultimately, the family loves to spend time on their 200 acre ranch just outside Nashville. Highlights include bonfires in the back forty, hang out on tailgates, pick guitars and having a few beers.

“It’s the most relaxing place in the world” Tim McGraw

Not only a Country Artist

Tim has done a number of movies over the years. Firstly, he performed in a movie called “Black Cloud”.  Secondly, in 2006, he played Rob McLaughlin in “Flicka”. A role he didn’t really want to do but after reading the script he couldn’t say no.

Flicka Movie Staring Tim McGraw

“Flicka” is a movie about a young teenager who dreams of one day taking over her fathers (McGraw) ranch.  Subsequently she tames a young mustang which her father sells. In conclusion she schemes to win a dangerous horse race in order to win back Flicka.

“I didn’t want to play a rancher. I didn’t want to have a cowboy hat on, I wanted o get away from that in the things I do. But, I read the script and fell in love with it. As hard as I tried to say no, I couldn’t.” Tim McGraw

Lastly, a few of his other movies include “The Kingdom” in 2007, The “Blind Side” in 2009, “Country Song” in 2010, as well as, a prominent role in “Tomorrowland” with George Clooney in 2015.

Beverley Mahood Merritt Mural

Downtown Murals in Merritt BC Canada

Singer, Songwriter, Performer, Actress, Humanitarian and TV Host

The Beverley Mahood Merritt Mural showcases a big-as-life painting, of the highly recognized, award winning singer and songwriter. Therefore, it is easy for us to conclude that this Canadian country music singer is the real deal and possesses the “it” factor. Beverley has earned her spot on a Merritt Mural downtown walking tour located in the Nicola Valley.

The Canadian Country Music Scene

In 1998 she signed with a record label owned by producer David Foster. That same year “Lace”, a Canadian country music group, was formed with the backing of Foster. Subsequently, between 1998 and 2001, the band charted four singles on the national country music charts. “I Want a Man”, the first single from the album, charted at number 7 in Canada. In addition, it was also a number one video, on CMT’s Chevy Top 20.

Beverley Mahood Touring with Musicians

Beverly states that performing on the road is her true passion. Therefore it makes sense why other artists would like to work with her on the road including music greats like George Straight, Tim McGraw, Kenny Rogers and many more. Every Christmas season since 1997 she has toured across Canada with “Order of Canada” artist and activist Tom Jackson’s, “Huron Carole”. The Huron Carole is a musical production touring Canada in a nationwide effort  to raise funding for local food banks. Mahood has worked and supported Canada’s Food Bank since 1997.

The World Comes Calling

Some exclusive performances have taken Beverly to all corners of the world. Beverly was ask to perform for the G8, World’s leaders in 2010. And during the years of 2004, 2010, and 2011, she performed for the American Military, as well as, the Canadian Military during tours in Afghanistan.

“My songs deal with life , mine and the people I meet along the way. Some are about life challenges but I have met fun happy people too, so it all gets covered.”

Performing for the Royal Family in 2012 was a definite highlight for Beverley. In other words she showed poise, confidence and grace during a performance for William and Kate on their first official visit to Canada. An honour ranking up there with the Beverley Mahood Merritt Mural. But then again I am bias.

Music Industry Beverley Mahood Style

Beverley Mahood and Brett Wilson established a business partnership in 2005. Together they formed BPM Entertainment Corp. to pursue creative investment opportunities in the entertainment world. However, they parted ways in 2012 when Mahood bought out Brett’s interest in the company. Beverley has continued to grow the business as a  successful entertainment venture.

Beverley Mahood Merritt Mural Compliments Her Songwriting

During her time in country music Mahood has enjoyed building strong relationships with some of Canada’s, as well as, Nashville’s finest. A result of this relationship building, she has built up a productive career in songwriting. Not just her songs either, she has added her writing talents to songs produced for other singers and performers.

” My biggest musical moment was probably singing with Bryan Adams or ACDC.”

For example, Mahood co-wrote the hit single “Come to Me”. The song was recorded by Celine Dion on her 2005 Miracle album. As a result “Come to Me” was released on radio in 2007. Followed up, soon later, by “Good to Be Alive” which became the theme song for the CMT reality series Project Mother and Project Dad. In the year 2016, the USA Presidential Campaign used Mahood’s song “Chariots of Fire”.

Acting, Modeling and Television Hosting

Beverley co-hosted Vancouver’s City-TV Breakfast Show through 2004-2005. In 2004 she captured a singer-dance role in the movie “Chicks with Sticks”. She then moved on to host “Project Mom and Dad”, “CMT Central”, as well, as “Karaoke Star”, between 2005-2010. In between, Mahood performed in 2009 at the Bohemian Ball in Toronto. It was held in support of the Sick Kids Foundation. Then from 2010-2014 Mahood hosted “Pick a Puppy” on CMT, YTN, as well as The W Network.  Lastly, in 2014 was high-lighted with a lead roll in the movie “Changing Season’s”.

“My most emotional moment was singing ‘Rainbow Connection’ on stage, one last time with Sesame Street’s Bob McGrath as he announced his retirement in March 2015.”

During these years Beverly was a regular guest on TSN’s “Off The Record”. In addition she acted as a celebrity model for “Bootlegger”, as well as, a TV commercial with “Smokey Robinson & Boyz II Men”.  She hosted a CBC Canada Day Celebration on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, for a crowd of hundreds of thousands.

A Sample Of Awards

One of the many reasons Beverley Mahood Merritt Mural makes sense is her 5 Juno nominations. As well as, Mahood has earned 3 Canadian Country Music Awards for ‘Female Independent Artist’, CMT’s ‘Indie Artist of the Year’, as well as, numerous Ontario Country Music Association Awards.

“As Artists we have the privilege of a voice and a stage. We have a responsibility to use that privilege so those without can be heard.”

In 2004 the United Nations saw fit to award Beverley the “Outreach Award”. The Canadian Country Music Association, in 2014, presented Mahood with the Prestigious “Slaight Music Humanitarian Award” for her philanthropic work.

Giving Back

Mahood has shown a deep commitment to humanitarian work. So her dedication to good causes is the reason for the overwhelming recognition she receives for her participation from humanitarian agencies around the world. For example 2019 will mark the 22nd year Beverley has hosted and performed at The Saskatchewan Kinsmen Telemiracle held every year.

“My terms and sense of charity and giving doesn’t come along with what I’m getting from it. It’s important for everyone to give back. Philanthropy doesn’t have anything to do with the size of your wallet, but rather the size of your heart.”

View the Beverley Mahood Merritt Mural

Beverley Mahood would return to Merritt BC on the Saturday afternoon of May 16, 2006 to participate in the unveiling of her painting at a mural ceremony in Downtown Merritt.

“I want to cover the story Merritt wants to tell and what this means to the artists. It’s the community that makes Merritt so special”

“It’s pretty unreal,” she said after she finished signing the mural. “You really don’t know what to expect until you see it.”

Merritt’s Murals

A Community Inspired Project

“In addition to painting larger than life murals of country music artists, the project also focused on providing local youth with skills development and employment opportunities”

Nothing defines Merritt more than its country roots. Officially recognized as the ‘Country Music Capital of Canada’, Merritt BC Canada is home to the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, the Merritt Walk of Stars (over 70 handprints of famous country music stars – including Johnny Cash, Tim McGraw and the likes!), and to dozens of murals depicting country music’s greatest performers.

Merritt Walk Of Stars Society

In 2003 the Merritt Walk of Stars Society was established with the mandate to work with community members to increase tourism to the region through the promotion of country music. Beginning with the star handprints collected at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival (1993 – 2011), the Merritt Walk of Stars inspired by a similar project in Vernon, BC contracted mural artist Michelle Loughery, and started the Merritt Walk of Stars Youth Mural Project (2005-2011).

Local Youth Project

In addition to painting larger than life murals of country music artists, the project also focused on providing local youth with skills development and employment opportunities. The youth were an integral and inspiring part of the mural project. Not only did the youth participants assist with the painting of the murals, but they also worked on a variety of community-based projects.

Community members rallied around the project – providing donations, work experience opportunities for the youth, and fundraising initiatives to support the project. Local aboriginal communities, municipal, provincial and federal governments, businesses, schools, and a wide-range of not for profit groups all supported the youth and the project. The Merritt mural project is more than just a Merritt Walk of Stars project (now the Canadian Country Music Heritage Society) – the Merritt mural project was, and continues to be, a community-based project that everyone in the community can claim as their own.

Merritt’s Murals Moving Forward

Today the iconic murals also play an important part of the community’s focus on tourism and economic development by continuing to draw many visitors to Merritt’s downtown. A recent initiative undertaken by the Merritt and Nicola Valley Destination Society, eh Canada Travel and the Canadian Country Music Heritage Society is bringing the murals to life through a digital walk.

You can take a digitally enabled and live walking tour of the murals by visiting downtown Merritt or you can take a virtual tour of the murals by visiting experiencenicolavalley.com.

Amber Papou worked with the Walk of Stars Society (2003-2011) and is currently an advisor to the Canadian Country Music Heritage Society.

“Yeah I’ve been Alberta Bound for all my life. And I’ll be Alberta Bound until I die” Paul Brandt

Paul Brandt is a country music artist featured on one of the Merritt Murals in Merritt BC Canada in the Nicola Valley. Therefore if you have never checked out the Merritt BC Murals then you should put it on your to-do list when visiting the Canadian Country Music Capital of Canada in Merritt BC Canada

Paul Brandt – Born Country

Paul Rennée Belobersycky, (aka Paul Brandt), was born on July 21st, 1972. By the same token if you live in Canada and listen to country music then you have most likely heard of Paul Brandt. Born in Calgary Alberta , Paul was raised approximately one hour away in Airdrie, Alberta, Canada. As a matter of fact Paul started his career as a nurse. He worked as a Pediatric RN until his hit song “My Heart has a History” from his debut album “Calm Before the Storm” made the country music charts in 1996.

Paul Brandt Live In Merritt

Paul Brandt played in the Country Music Capital of Canada a couple times over the years. Therefore has gained a larger following within the region of the Nicola Valley. As a result Paul has been a popular performer playing twice at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival (now called the Rockin River Music Festival). He first played in 2005 and again in 2009.

“Everything in my heart I’ll give you. Everything in my soul, it’s yours”, Paul Brandt

A Country Music Career

In 1996, Paul Brandt entered the country music charts with his hit country music single “My Heart Has a History”. The break through country music hit song put him on the radar on the international stage. Consequently, this recognition propelled him to be the first male Canadian country musician to reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in the United States in 24 years.

Paul Brandt’s History of Country Music

Brandt’s first attempt at country music came with his first demo with A&R records at the Warner Canada office.  In addition the demo was sent to their colleagues at Warner Nashville. To clarify, this was an attempt to find a country music singer of which the two branches could work together on. Paige Levy of Nashville A&R was impressed with the country music talent of Paul Brandt. As a result Paige Levy forwarded the demo to Hit Quarters in hopes of putting a larger spotlight on Paul Brandt and his potential as a songwriter.

On The Road To Nashville

Because of this increased exposure, Paul headed to Nashville to develop his style and country music talents. As a matter of fact, the move to Nashville helped spearhead some collaborative efforts in songwriting with some experienced country music stars. Ultimately it was a smart move as it elevated Paul’s song writing skills. Because of this focus on his song writing skills Paul created the album, “Calm before the Storm”. From there on in, the albums began to roll out.

“Yeah I’ve been Alberta Bound for all my life. And I’ll be Alberta Bound until I die”, Paul Brandt

Brandt’s second album, “Outside the Frame”, album did not have the same success as “Calm Before the Storm”. Determination and a never-quit attitude fueled Paul’s passion for song writing and performing. This passion for country music led to his third album “Thats the Truth”. Three albums later in 2000 he released his Canada only album “What I want to be Remembered for”. And take it from me, there is plenty to remember about Paul Brandt.

Brand-T Records Was Born

After this Paul started “Brand-T Records” with geat success. That is to say that his own label earned him numerous awards. It seems that being unsigned helped Paul Brandt up his game and produce an acoustic album, “Small Town and Big Dreams”.  In the light of his new direction, the album earned him the CCMA Album of the Year. But that was just the beginning.

Paul Brandt Selfie Photo

This Time Around For Paul Brandt

His follow up album, “This Time Around” earned Paul the CCMA Album of the Year and the song “That’s What I Love About Jesus” earned him a GMA Canada Covenant Award. In short, the album had legs as it went platinum in Canada. Consequently other hit songs were recognized on the air waves like “Leavin'”, featuring Keith Urban and his remake of  “Convoy”.  Lastly, from the same album, “Alberta Bound” was released. This song was a tribute to his home province of Alberta, Canada

Then Comes Risk

The album, “Risk”, was released in 2007.  Soon later the Canadian Juno Awards came calling in April 2008 and awarded Paul the Country Recording of the Year.  Not to mention in May of 2007 the first single, “Didn’t Even See the Dust,” was released. Consequently you should know that in 2007 in Canada the single “Dust” was one of the 20 most played country music songs in the nation.

Life Is In The Song

The momentum kept building for Paul. In addition, in September 2011, he released the album “Give It Away”.  Soon later, in October 2012, he continued with the follow up gospel album named, “Just As I Am”.  In short, Paul’s collection of songs referred to many of his personal life stories detailing the story of  Paul’s childhood and growing up in Canada.

At first it was reported that she had suffered a broken wrist and some cuts and abrasions. However, it was later discovered she received 40-50 stitches to her face.

Although it took some time to heal she was soon back in the spotlight. April 15, 2018 she was back on stage performing her new song “Cry Pretty” at the ACM Awards. It was such a powerful performance. As a result of her performance she received a standing ovation from the audience.

A Star Was Born – The Younger Years

Carrie Underwood was born on March 10, 1983 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Carrie was raised on her family’s farm and, to this day, holds very fond memories of her time on the farm.

Underwood attended Northeastern State University after graduating from high school. Carrie majored in broadcast journalism and not singing as she decided to put it on hold. But that did not last long. It was during her senior year in 2004 that she decided to try out for American Idol.

Merritt BC Murals – Carolyn Dawn Johnson

Featured Country Music Musician : Carolyn Dawn Johnson

“I’m going for the big picture” Carolyn Dawn Johnson

The Merritt BC Murals attraction includes Canadian country music singer Carolyn Dawn Johnson. She is one of  25 + Canadian Country Music Murals located throughout the community of Merritt, BC, Canada in the Nicola Valley. But here, at this mural in front of you,  I am going to tell you a little about Carolyn Dawn Johnson.

Carolyn Dawn Johnson – Merritt BC Murals

Carolyn Dawn Johnson played at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival (now called the Rockin’ River Country Music Fest) in 2002 and again in 2006. Johnson was born and raised in Alberta, Canada. At the age of 5 she was singing in church and started taking piano lessons from the pastors wife.

At one point in her life she steered away from country music. But luckily for country music fans, Carolyn finally found her way back to the stage and calls that period of her life, that hiatus from country music, “a stain in her heart”.

The Songs Of A Canadian Country Singer

Many a country music fan of Carolyn Dawn Johnson know her best for her songs like “Complicated”, “Georgia”, and “I don’t want you to go”.

Carolyn also has two children, Abigail and Bennett. In one of Carolyn’s videos you can watch as she and her daughter Abigail sing a duet (story book style) that she wrote with Stella ladies.

Life Of Carolyn Dawn Johnson

Carolyn Dawn Johnson was born on April 30, 1971 in Grand Prairie Alberta. She had many influences growing up. Her parents would play country music records while later in life she listened to many other artists and genres. Some included ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, Charley Pride and Marty Stewart.

At 5 years old she started taking piano lessons from the pastors wife at her church. Then in high school she learned to play the flute, saxophone and clarinet. Because her teacher Evangeline Theissen kept sending her books about piano, she continues to play the keys with passion.

High School And Beyond

Although she took music in high school, her teachers were not very encouraging. She then turned to science. After graduation she attended Trinity Western University in Langley, BC studying biology. The following year she returned to Alberta, Canada and specialized in education.

Night Clubs

While attending collage she frequently went to the local clubs and sat in with some of the featured bands.  It was while playing with the local bands that her confidence grew on stage and in her talents. The bands, watching her perform on stage night in and night out, encouraged her to get back into music. It was then that she realized that her true calling was country music.

Pre Merritt Mural – Reba McEntire

It started out slow for this country music icon. For example Reba’s first single ” I Don’t Want to Be a One Night Stand” was released on January 22 1976. After that came her second single “There’s Nothing Like Love Between a Women and a Man.” and her third single “Glad I Waited Just for You”. To sum it up, none of the songs broke the Top 80 on the billboard charts. After that Reba’s self titled album released in March 1977 didn’t even make the billboard charts.

“Out of a Dream” Reba’s second album did much, much better. It was released in 1979. The album cover of Patsy Cline’s “Sweet Dreams” became Reba’s first top twenty hit.

Reba McEntire’s Year Of Country Music Awards

Her first certified Gold Album was “Just a Little Love.” As a result this album earned Reba her first Country Music Association Award for Female Vocalist of the Year.
