When you drive the Coquihalla between Hope and Kamloops or Kelowna, make sure you plan a rest stop in Merritt.
Take an hour, get off the highway, bypass the franchise outlets and get into town. It is a great, historic BC town offering many splendid home-cooking cafés and a lovely walk around town. If you are a bit adventurous, drive or hike up to one of two lookouts for a panorama of the town, the Valley, and a nice introduction to BC’s cattle country.
Merritt also affords a couple of easy-going walks along the Coldwater and Nicola rivers. When heading south, stopping in Merritt offers one of the last opportunities to relax and take in some fresh country air. It’s well worth a stop for coffee, a terrific bowl of soup, and a wee walk-about.
